After the England Women's team (Lionesses) European Championship victory last year there has been a surge in interest over here. I've watched a couple of games and there have been some great matches so far. Brazil got knocked out the other day and Germany have a battle to fill the gaps in the bracket when they play in a few minutes. The USA were nearly knocked out when a last minute attack hit the post in their final group game. It's almost enjoyable.

All the pundits were predicting a USA v England or Germany final and the real tournament starts with the knockouts at the weekend.

EDIT: Bracket updated with the Quarter Final Line Up.

The finest of margins. This is how the US team were eliminated. After what looked like a fabulous save from their keeper in the penalty shootout with the team behind 4-5 - the ball looped up and back under the crossbar where she nearly made a second save on the ball. They had to use goal line technology to find it had crossed the goal line and knocked the USA out.

USA should’ve won in regulation time but the Swedish goalkeeper produced some remarkable saves and was clearly the reason the US are out.

You know, I don't follow soccer, but it seems there are too many women on our team that are loud-mouthed bitches. Because of this, I find them getting knocked out this early as karma and totally funny.

LOL

The Lionesses progressed through to the Semi Final after another really tight game and they now meet the "Matilda's" from the host nation.

Semi final lineup
Tuesday morning SPAIN v SWEDEN
Wednesday morning AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND

Go Lionesses!

As I am sure you know    , the lionesses made it to the final earlier today. It will be their first ever World Cup Final and is against Spain, who are also there for the first time.

I'm sure you will all be tuning in at 6am on the East Coast and 3am in the West on Sunday. Since our men's team has been underachievers since 1966, there will be plenty watching here. Viewing figures of 15 million are predicted which isn't bad for a country of 65 million.

Nice! I get up at about 6am EDT so why not. Wife is in Seattle so will need a way to kill 8 hours before the M's game! :)

This talk on women's soccer has made me remember a joke a friend used to tell....:

What's the difference between a women's soccer team and a pack of Pygmies?

One of them is a pack of cunning runts.

Bad, right?
