If every pitcher adopted Nolan Ryan's training regimen, attitude and workload, I would think that most of them would end up injured, but with the current MLB pitch counts, Nolan Ryan could not have been Nolan F'n Ryan.Hy Feiber wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 5:13 pmHe’s Old School, I’ve heard him question all these Pitch Count obsessives.Happy as hell wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 4:17 pmCertainly some of Ryan’s lifetime record accomplishments can be attributed to his longevity and durability. we don't remember the ones that did breakdown, Bouton is an exception because he happened to write a book

At least in re his regimen and attitude.
I understand the workload part.
Re: Nolan Ryan Trivia
Certainly some did brake down, but I seldom heard of at least a half of a starting rotation routinely going on the DL the same season, with absences of up to 2 years.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2019 9:26 pmwe don't remember the ones that did breakdown, Bouton is an exception because he happened to write a book
Not to mention these relievers, per the current year here.
Teams like the Dodgers and Orioles had at least 3
Twenty Game winners, a rarity now.
Cuellar, Palmer, McNally, Flanagan, Stone, et al, the Dodgers with Sutton, Osteen, Singer, and Drysdale and Koufax earlier.
Re: Nolan Ryan Trivia
The vast majority of top flight pitchers back then did not have short careers. Think about it, if short[ened] careers were the norm with your most prized pitchers going 250 to 300 innings per year, then the 250 to 300 inning standard would not have been around for several decades.
Pitch counts did not become "a thing" until after free agency and every player represented full time by a rat faced, hand rubbing lawyer / agent.... .

Re: Nolan Ryan Trivia
Probably should have clarified that a little better. Tanana kind of lost it in 1978, but from 1974 - 1977 he had a bWAR of 28.1 whereas Ryan's was 19.8. Tanana's ERAs were also consistently lower than Ryan's. To be fair Ryan did miss at least ten starts in 1974. But even in 1972 and 1973 before Tanana came along Ryan was a little bit below Tanana's level from 1975 - 1977.
There's a reason why Tanana got the opening night start over Ryan in the Mariners' first game in 1977.

Add to your point the fact that for your top 3 starters in the 50’s and 60’s, 20-25 complete games per year each were the norm.Moe Gibbs wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2019 11:26 pmThe vast majority of top flight pitchers back then did not have short careers. In addition, the top reliever in each league got The Fireman of the Year Award, he’d come in, sometimes was early as the 7th, bases loaded, 1 run game, “put out the fire,” get the last 3 outs.
At most he’d have 25 saves, generally.

Its pussitis.
These guys are pampered and taught that any booboo should be looked after for precautionary measures.
Then when they don't feel 100% and they're facing a tough lineup, like Paxton the little puss, whaaa my fingernail is infected from getting a manicure.
