Prime target Zack Wheeler

Post by Hanjag » Mon Nov 11, 2019 8:06 am

Hear me out:
He is an ideal power right handed pitcher to compliment our Marco G lefties. He has analytics and MPH both trending up.
*His max velocity on the FB has gone up each of the last two years up to 100.9 max in 2019.
* He made only 5.9 M in 2019
* Forbes has him at 72M/ 4 back to the Metz.
* Fip has been 3.48, and 3.28 last 2 years.

I may have talked myself down from him. He really only has a 100 ERA+ career with a lower fip than ERA but marginally better. I still see an improving trend line on a pitcher that was good for 4.1 BWAR last year. Fangraphs has him at 4.2 and 4.7 FWAR last 2. :cry: Metz slapped the franchise 17.8M tag. Probably gives them the inside line on him.

This years FA class of pitchers seems like it is better than most years. A lot of good 29 year old pitchers. I still think it is a year too early to go for it.

Wheeler will spend more time on the IL than in the rotation

trade rumors has him as their number 4 FA, estimated price tag around $100 mil, but the draft pick is protected i guess, don't see Dipoto spending $100 mil on a pitcher. And yeah, he could have to sign for less, but is it going to be the Mariners that get a deal, with teams like the Phillies and Yankees looking for pitching?
4. Zack Wheeler – Phillies. Five years, $100MM. For teams seeking ace potential without the Gerrit Cole price tag, Wheeler is the top choice. Though the 29-year-old’s 3.96 ERA this season doesn’t jump off the page, he’s displayed the ability to miss bats and added a career-best walk rate. Over his past 350 innings, Wheeler is sporting a 3.47 ERA and a 3.27 FIP with a strikeout per inning and just 2.4 walks per nine. He’s also one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in the game, averaging 96.7 mph this year on his fastball. The Statcast profile on Wheeler is strong, with above average fastball and curveball spin rate and low exit velocity and hard-hit percentage.

seems to me glancing down the list, you're getting to like Keuchel or Pineda when it begins to look realistic, that is, not shopping at the top of the food chain as Dipoto put it. They could always trade for a starter
“We don't expect we will go into this offseason and be scouring the free-agent market at the top end of the food chain,”

If they're going to try and win soon, Wheeler makes a lot of sense and would probably be my #1 realistic target, assuming Cole is an Angel.

Sign Wheeler and Alex Wood and we're not looking too bad in either depth or talent.

Wheeler would be a good pickup. Could probably sign him for 4-5 years, so doesn't impact resigning the young players when the time comes, and slots in as a pretty good #2 guy, and could conceivably make a jump.

If there was a rule that contracts could only be one year in length then it would be too early to go for it but there isn't so its not.
