Trade Proposal: Philadelphia Phillies

Post by bpj » Fri Dec 06, 2019 11:48 pm

Mariners trade:
Kyle Seager and $0 +
Mitch Haniger

Get:

Alec Bohm (3B)
Jay Bruce (salary offset, for flip or DFA)
+ their top minor league pitcher

*Didn't see that McCutchen was on the Phillies, he's not listed in a corner on their depth chart and I didnt look at their third option in CF before thinking of this.

Ooops..I read the title and thought you were proposing trading the Phillies for the Mariners.. ;)

I love this idea. Great pitching isn't going to just materialize out of thin air. We need to put several hooks in the water.

There's no reason Dipoto couldn't attach a Gordon or Seager to Haniger and still get a useful prospect.

Especially if we take some dead salary like Bruce from an NL team in return.

He provided the blueprint with Diaz/Cano, now let's see a followup.

If they're waiting until we're good to add to this core, there's no way it all comes together by the time Hanigers control is running out. They're going to have to trade him at some point. Same with Gonzales, imo.

Looks like he ranked 37th on MLB's mid season top 100 prospect list with an MLB era of 2021.

He is their top prospect.

That's not a very good ERA. ;)

From you link:
Mariners (5) - Prospect Points: 225 (8th)

24) Jarred Kelenic, OF (2022)
54) Julio Rodriguez, OFF (2022)
51) Logan Gilbert, RHP (2021)
74) Evan White, 1B (2020)
77) Justin Dunn, RHP (2019)

A year ago at this time, the Mariners had just one Top 100 prospect, and now there are five as GM Jerry Dipoto continues to restock the system. It’s hard not to be excited about the young outfield combo of Kelenic and Rodriguez at the top. Like the Indians, the Mariners haven't appeared on our list of baseball's Top 10 farm systems since we began ranking them in 2015, but they're very much in the conversation now.
Those rankings seem conservative. Especially JROD and Gilbert.

Would be nice if Dipoto could figure out a way to get Bohm if he deserves his rank above those guys. Probably has more to do with his ETA  than anything. 3B candidates aren't readily available like most positions it seems.

Seager + Haniger for Bohm + Jay Bruce + even take on Andrew McCutchen if $ doesnt work out on Seager/Bruce OR get another prospect.

Could ease the pain for the Brewers of not signing Moustakas and if they miss on Donaldson.

They seem to be trying hard to win now, Seager isn't a bad option if we take some salary on in return and fill two of their needs at the same time. Haniger+Seager would fit in great in Philly's lineup imo.

They may be content going with McCutchen in their OF.

McCutchen was playing well until he went down, probably content to roll with him again

Phillies supposed to have a hard on for Rendon now, and its attributed to the owner, not the GM
Needless to say, Rendon would be a team-changing, timeline-shifting signing for the Phillies, and owner John Middleton has made Rendon the team's new "No. 1 target," according to Nightengale's report.
