Here is a good question. Would JD have said anyone of those things in public? NFW!

There are so many old white guys on this forum....too funny.

Mathers is gone. This org has been a joke for years, and this is just another reason why they will suck for many years to come.

Kevin Mather could speak with Julio Rodriguez in Spanish if he doesn't like his star prospect's English (which is not bad):

As your dear leader Joe Biden would say, we're the ones who can find our way onto the internets.

Spare me the outrage.

You are right.... more than racist his comments are utterly idiotic and put the organization in a very bad light. It is truly clear that the behind the scenes look Mather gave us proves this ownership group will not do what it takes to win. Heck, they will barely do enough to get people to watch them.

This was just put out by Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic

Kevin Mather should have been gone by now. The Mariners should have dismissed him after the Seattle Times reported in 2018 that, before he became team president and CEO, he was one of three club executives accused by women of inappropriate workplace conduct, resulting in financial settlements for the complainants.

Think maybe now, after Mather’s tone-deaf and offensive remarks to the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club in a video call Feb. 5, the Mariners’ head-in-the-sand ownership finally will take action? He needs to be fired by the time you read this. His cringeworthy musings, one more misguided than the next, are Exhibits A through Z in why many players and fans hold owners in contempt. If this is how ownership types really think, why should any of them be trusted?

Perhaps Mather is at the extreme with his discriminatory remarks on former Japanese pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma and top Dominican prospect Julio Rodriguez, and what he perceived as the difficulty they have faced in learning English as a second language. Or maybe some other executives think this way, but he was the only one in his position dumb enough to say such things in a public forum. Mather’s comments surfaced on YouTube Friday and were removed Sunday, but not before Lookout Landing had posted the entire transcript. And now there is no turning back from this nonsense.

Mather, who joined the Mariners in 1996, opened his question-and-answer session by saying, “I thought I’d ramble a little bit,” then said he would touch on three topics: The experience of playing the 2020 season in the COVID-19 pandemic; his expectations for how ‘21 will unfold and, “then to end on a high note, I’ll tell you about the team where I think we are.” About the only thing Mather said worth applauding was, “No one cares if wealthy sports team owners lose money. Shut up and move on.” The rest was a window into an imperious executive’s soul.

Reporters who cover the team say Mather is not even correct about Rodriguez, whose English he described as “not tremendous.” The team president presumably is correct about the Mariners’ other top outfield prospect, Jarred Kelenic, rejecting a six-year extension with three club options, a decision that will make him the latest poster boy for service-time manipulation.

Yep, Mather admitted an April demotion for Kelenic was in the team’s plans, saying, “We would like to get him a few more at-bats in the minor leagues, probably Triple A Tacoma for a month.” Of course, Kelenic would be in the Mariners’ Opening Day lineup if he had accepted such a deal, like Mather favorite Evan White did in agreeing to a six-year, $24 million extension a year ago (“He took a lot of heat for signing that, the union really pushed back and said, don’t do it,” Mather said).

Team executives generally do not blurt out details of contract discussions, much less talks with 21-year-old potential franchise cornerstones such as Kelenic. Nor do they take shots at respected veterans such as third baseman Kyle Seager, entering the final year of a seven-year, $100 million contract, as “probably overpaid.” The Mariners hold a $15 million option on Seager for 2022. Mather’s dig prompted the player’s wife, Julie, to tweet, “So we should put our house in Seattle on the market now, orrrrrr?”

Mather also made reference to two pitchers who at the time of his talk were still free agents, revealing this touching sentiment about James Paxton and Taijuan Walker: “Sooner or later, these players are going to turn their hat over and come with hat in hand looking for a contract.” The Mariners later signed Paxton, a member of the union’s eight-man executive sub-committee, to a one-year, $8.5 million deal, well below the $12.5 million-plus Mather said he was seeking. Walker agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets that will grow to three years and at least $23 million if he exercises a player option.

There was plenty more. Mather said that Kelenic is upset Baseball America ranked him its No. 4 overall prospect (actually he said No. 5), behind Rodriguez. That as Mariners president he was “embarrassed” spring training started on time because the players and owners could not agree to delay the season. That the Mariners fared better financially than most other professional sports teams last season … not that it motivated them to increase spending with the goal of being more competitive in 2021.

By the time the session was over, Mather had given the union 45 minutes of bulletin-board material, at a time when tensions between the players and owners are the highest they have been since the players were on strike in 1994-95. His comments about Iwakuma and Rodriguez alone should be enough to prompt his dismissal. But then, the team’s admission that Mather was the subject of two complaints from female employees in 2009-10 should have been enough to remove him. And the good ship Mariner rolled merrily along.

This shouldn’t even require a phone call from commissioner Rob Manfred to Mariners owner and managing partner John Stanton, though here’s guessing it will. Enough of the Mariners acting in denial. Enough of an executive who disparages his own players. Enough of Mather.

I watched and actually didn't see anything wrong.

Seager IS overpaid. We all know it.

And why pay an interpreter for a non-player that wanted to come back. The insulting part may have been that his English suddenly got better. But, the same could probably have been said of Ichiro. Was his English good enough by the end to do his own interviews too? Probably.. But he was worth it to them.

The way he said Julio's English is not tremendous didn't seem like a dig. Is it? I haven't watched him talk.

What did you guys actually find offensive?
In 166 games since the start of the 2019 season Kyle Seager has posted 4.4 fWAR, valued at $35.5 million:

Perhaps Kevin Mather is overpaid if he can't recognize value.

Aren't you the dolt from the Seahawks forum who bitches on every game thread about how the team is finished and won't make the play-offs? So you're a bigot as well?
