You don't see the big power with Ford but his bat is more advanced, his contact and chase rate. Montes has some contact issues.

Montes
The contact skills are the major question mark here. With a big frame and an aggressive swing, Montes does have holes. He ran a contact rate near 69 percent last year, but as the season wore on, he began to see more breaking balls which really ate him up. In September, the swing rate ticked up, as did the chase rate, all while the contact rate dropped below 65 percent, a concerning mark
Montes has 2Ks and 3 walks in 20 PAs. 10% K rate and 15% walk rate.

Ford has 5Ks and 2 walks in 18 PAs. 28% K rate and 10% walk rate.

Ford is two levels higher but almost 2 years older.

Last season Harry had a 19% K rate and hit a HR once every 38 PAs. He hit .253

Montes had a 25% K rate and hit a HR once over 23 PAs. He hit .303

I prefer the latter.

Holy shit I had NO idea he was Matt Holliday's son. Never even occurred to me despite the unusual last name.

They talked about it a lots on draft and leading up to it. Mariners didn’t pick early, so that’s probably why you didn’t see it
The poster formerly known as Kingfelixk. With a new forum comes a new boardname. Julio is my guy, plus we share a birthday, so that's Culiooooo

Amazing how baseball skills are genetic but then sometimes the kid doesn't get that gene like the Griffeys. Ken Jr got it big time but his brother didn't and his son didn't.

Seagers Corey is great, Kyle was good but Justin never made it past AA.

When I first saw Griffey live he was 19 and I was 21. Now his son is 30 yo. Insanity.

Making it to pro ball is pretty special, they all did that. Sure junior and Corey got it more, but compared to the rest of the population they all had careers. It gets to the nurture or nature question, probably some of both

Talking chase rate, contact rate. This is what I imagine you consider hype. The deal is Ford is considered to have an advanced bat because his numbers are very good. I don't think it's a straight line projection to the majors. The pitching is a lot more advanced and guys that hammer minor league pitching can struggle.

He is hyped because he is athletic but being athletic in baseball is the frosting not the cake. If you don't have the cake nobody is going to eat the frosting alone. Yes he walked a lot but he didn't hit and now he is going to walk a lot less because AA has all the future MLB TOR starters. Hitless in 16 PAs. Sure tiny sample but not promising. Maybe he gets a hit today.
