Sports hernia treatment
Nonsurgical Treatment
Rest. In the first 7 to10 days after the injury, treatment with rest and ice can be helpful. ...
Physical therapy. Two weeks after your injury, you may begin to do physical therapy exercises to improve strength and flexibility in your abdominal and inner thigh muscles.
Anti-inflammatory medications.

Pete Carroll says Clowney has an injury related to a sports hernia. Was treated for that Friday in Philly. Carroll says the treatment seems to have gone well and that Clowney "has passed along'' that he's hoping to play Monday.

He's hoping to play. That doesn't mean a whole lot. They would be wise to not push it or it could become something worse.

at this point in the season everybody is pretty much playing hurt, he will be alright if he can take the discomfort, remember what RW went through, they need Clowney, that is what makes championships, its as much about determination as it is talent at this point in the season...
“We’re counting on him getting back,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “We are, we’re counting on him getting back, but he’s still got to make it. That’s a little twinge of optimism there again. He feels good about it and he wants to go. He’s going to try and make it.”
he got out of Miami because he didn't want to play there, he wants to play here

I don't know he has history with this injury. He played his last season in South Carolina nursing it. He didn't get surgery until after he was drafted.

true, interesting, he has played through one before. They are not really hernias, and can be hard to diagnosis.
The main difference between a sports hernia and a regular hernia is that a sports hernia isn't actually a hernia. "Sports hernia is bit of a misnomer," says David Krpata, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Hernia Center. "In the simplest terms, a hernia is a hole or weakness in the abdominal wall that allows things to go through it that should not. This typically results in a noticeable bulge to the patient."

Because there's no bulge, sports hernias can be difficult to diagnose. "In a sports hernia there is no actual defect, which is why we now refer to sports hernias as athletic pubalgia," says Dr. Krpta. "Athletic pubalgia is the result of significant strain on the pubic bone where the abdominal muscles and the lower extremity muscles insert."

So what's actually going on in your body if you have a sports hernia?

"If there is a discrepancy between the strength of the major core muscles, specifically, the rectus abdominis, and the upper thigh musculature there will be excessive strain on the pubic bone which can result in inflammation and/or tearing of the muscles that insert on the pubic bone." says Dr. Krpata.
