Sheff

Post by D-train » Sun Sep 27, 2020 3:17 pm

After his first two bad starts these are his stats.

6-2 2.64 ERA and 44Ks in 47 innings. .622 OPS against.

Yet Divish oddly makes this statement in his mailbag:
The Mariners also need to add another starting pitcher for the next few years unless you are comfortable with the current rotation beyond Marco Gonzales and Justin Dunn.

wrong forum but I will respond, its still SSS, the deal with high priced FAs is performance over time, when you get down to it, it becomes quite valuable actually

But why Dunn over Sheff. He must have just spaced or something.

oh okay, in that sense yeah... but If you want to push the rebuild forward I would think investing in some veteran TOR pitching be where you would start, ie the Astros...

Yes, yes! The thing is we have 3 pretty good shots at what I would label a #2. Marco, according to roster resource was the #24 starter in all of baseball he had a 138 ERA+ and a 3.44 fip. I will admit I have velocity bias so he could only be a #2 at peak sorry Moyer. Justus had a 3.58 ERA 118 ERA+ and a 3.17 fip. I am willing to count him in as a #2 type. Kik had a 5.17 ERA but a 3.3 fip Kik gave up a .681 OPS so that fip looks more legit than the ERA.
That is 3 #2 type starters
Dunn is servicable as a back of the rotation type but he walked 6/9 had a 2HR/9 rate but only 6hits/9. So, I don't think of him as someone you want in the rotation without growth.

If the rebuild works Logan Gilbert and Emerson are no worse than the group of three. And you must have a #1 among your "native' arms. But then you go and add an "ACE"? I would hope that Logan Gilbert is ready my no later than the control clock for 2021.

If you add Logan for next year you should have a solid rotation a #1 and 3 #2 types, and most likely a Dunn to Logan transition maybe you even go for another 6 man to start at least.
