It seems like they didn't have him doing the kind of physical work to develop WR skills, like cutting and stutter stepping and such, but what do I know? If anything, I am criticizing the coaches.
He's 6'4" 228 ... he better not be out there cutting and stutter stepping... You don't know what the coaches did with him.

It's hard to understand why the coaches at Ole Miss did so little to develop DK's skills as a wide receiver. You have to ask the question, was it something about DK's personality (i.e. complacency or lack of ambition) along with there being some other quality WR talent on their roster where they just didn't feel the need or desire to go to the effort to get the most out of him?
A college coach has one job for the most part, win games. Think of it in baseball terms. If you have thrown 90 straight fastballs and have a perfect game going, how stupid would it be to throw a changeup on pitch 91? DK was, as I understand it, extremely hard to defend running go routes, and I can only imagine based on his size and speed.

The best thing for DK's development would have been to make him more versatile, and more than likely wouldn't have hurt the coaches reputation with incoming recruits either. But, it may not have been the best thing to get that team wins.

They didn't win though. Metcalf missed games due to injury (one reason why he dropped) and the starting QB when he was healthy got injured... Its been well documented that the backup was horrible. They probably had to simplify the offense for him. Metcalf's route running is fine.

Looks like DK is capable of making a play on an intermediate route:

Remember when the D said they were gonna stop him when pads came on?
Thus far, the Ole Miss product hasn't disappointed. Metcalf's 6-foot-3, 228-pound frame coupled with blazing 4.33 speed continues to turn heads through four practices. On Monday, Metcalf hauled in a one-handed, 40-yard touchdown catch from Wilson down the left sideline in a 7-on-7 period. Later during the same drill, Wilson hit Metcalf's back shoulder for a 6-yard score.

Yeah I thought it might be. Can't believe the NFL let's that go down. I guess ya get what ya pay for. I am fine with it since I wouldn't have paid $100 for a jersey.
