From the wikipedia article DB posted i would then conclude the term really shouldn't be used to refer to a position on a roster. That's where the confusion arises. No-one is exclusively an "edge" rusher, they are a any defender that lines up just outside the tackles and near the los.

Much of how guys classify at the combine comes down to how they were used on defense in college. That being said, defenders who rarely drop into coverage are generally called defensive ends even if they are light like OLBs. Enter the term, “edge defender”.

This term was created to denote guys who are the best on the team at rushing the passer - from the edge of the OL. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you can’t move them around and use them in the A or B gap, but in general they are going to be found in a 7 or 9 position (C or D gap) attacking the tackle or the tight end (if he stays to block) on a pass play.
The NFL doesn’t recognize “edge defender” as a position so edge guys are either defensive ends or linebackers for the purposes of franchise tags. The franchise tag value for a “linebacker” in 2023 is 20.9 million, which is second only to QB at 32.4 million. WR and DE both come in at 19.7 million. Using franchise tag money, the NFL says that edge defenders are second only to QBs in terms of value to the team.

Can Murphy fit as a 3-4 nose tackle? Seems like he is more of a Williams type of DT.

same weight but Big Cat is taller, so Murphy a little thicker, thus better suited to NT. both are good run D tackles, but as you say, not the perfect NT in a true 3-4. that why i'm more interested in his former linemate Sweat for this current roster - a true NT if there ever was one.

It seems Murphy is considered the better of the two overall, probably because of his ability to pressure the QB. In the simulations Sweat seems to fall into the 2nd round almost every time. But his size is more in line with a 3-4 NT.

Kind of an April Fools thing, since I highly doubt we draft Penix. But I don't hate the idea.

Can't believe he was there at 36. He will go in the first round after his combine and Pro Day.

I agree. Nix was available as well. Nix was also available when I took Newton a few picks later, but I don't remember when he went. I wouldn't take Nix at all. Not sold on him one bit. The dude never threw down field, and when asked at the combine or his Pro Day or whatever? He didn't look good.

Love this one. Lots of Local Flavors. Beefed up both Lines and Safety room. Snagged a much needed TE. Oh yeah and took our Franchise QB in the second round. :)
