But not every player IS rated as an athlete. Why in the world would you take a QB and see where he is ranked as an athlete. Isn't that what the over all ranking is for? There is a top 500 and more now a days right?
The overall ranking is just a composite of the positional rankings with certain positions being weighted higher due to their greater importance in the outcome of a game, i think.
I just don't see much value in not ranking some players at a specific position. Or, by the term "athlete" do they mean a rb/wr/kick returner hybrid?

I understand athlete as being someone who hasn't been specifically locked into one position on the field.

If you ranked them all, were would the #1 RG in the Nation end up as an athlete? I think it would be a rather pointless exercise.

Right - from my observation it just means the ranking services arent sure which position a guy will play, so rather than risk being "wrong", they just call him an athlete. Usually they only do this with so called "skill-position" players - a lot of WR/RB hybrids, or WR/CB, sometimes CB/S, and less frequently, as for incoming frosh Asa Turner, a S/LB. In contrast Kaleb McGary came in as a DE/OT, actually starting out on the defensive side, but nobody was calling him an "athlete".

So why does it make sense to rank "athletes" as though it was a position on a football team? Just rank the player at whatever positions they played in high school.
