Three batter rule?

Post by 95Lives! » Fri Dec 13, 2019 2:03 pm

Manfred announced yesterday that there will be a new rule in 2020 requiring relievers to face at least three batters.

Sothe one out only guys are out of jobs. I kind of despise this rule because it takes a tactic away from managers.

Yeah, seems contrived to me, ever since they put baseball on TV i think its probably been headed down hill. Its like Brisbee here, the pace of play is slower, because, well the pace of play is slower. They can screw with it to their hearts content but that is the way it is
Baseball will keep trying different ideas, from limiting pickoff throws to limiting mound visits. They’ve already messed with intentional walks, and umpire reviews are going to be less accurate but shorter. The 2014 game didn’t feature the new rules preventing hitters from stepping entirely out of the batter’s box on inaction pitches, which has already helped a bit.

Based on one unscientific deep dive into a pair of similar games, though, the biggest problem with the pace of play is, well, the pace of play. Pitchers don’t get rid of the ball like they used to. Hitters aren’t expecting them to get rid of the ball like they used to. It adds a couple minutes to every half-inning, which adds close to a half-hour.

Its idiotic because a team can easily still use their entire pen in a 9 inning game. The should limit the number of relievers not the number of hitters they can face.

I think ot should be 3 batters OR until the inning is over to eliminate the time spent switching pitchers mid inning.

And only give them two or three warm up pitches. That's what the goddamn bullpens for.

This makes no effing sense. It takes away lefty-righty situational strategy, dilutes the ‘specialist’ role, and removes the excitement that can happen with the game-on-the-line, one-on-one matchup between specialist and batter.

They hope to speed the game up with this ? Why don’t they try limiting successive foul balls on third strike instead ? I wouldn’t like it either, but it would be more directly impactful to their goal.

I would have been happy with your solution also, but I'm happy enough with the new rule. It will eliminate the 3 pitching changes per inning (most of the time). Hitters will gain an advantage, offense goes up slightly. I like it. Have to put runs on the board to see who wins. We should see a few more runs, and a few less specialty pitchers.

I believe this is the actual rule.

Three batter rule? I think the Mariners might need the 10 run rule this year. :D

I say just have both teams use the same, permanently stationed pitching machine that has a limited repertoire of pitches that both teams must either sink or swim with. Set up the programming so that the machine occasionally serves up hanging curves, center cut fastballs and is wild enough to walk 2 or 3 batters per 9 innings.
Make this change ONLY in American League parks where the fans always want to tinker with the game.
In NL parks where the fans truly love the game to be played as traditionally as possible..no changes will be necessary... :P
