The Conference says we are mediocre...

Post by Michael K. » Wed Oct 07, 2020 5:52 pm

We were voted 3rd in the North and 6th in the Conference. Yuck. I know this stuff doesn't matter, but I just can't believe that a few years ago we had a young team playing in the Final 4, and we are now back to behind Oregon and USC as well as Cal, ASU and Utah.

If Jimmy Lake and Co. are searching for motivation, look no further.

The Pac-12 Conference released its preseason media poll on Thursday — one day prior to the beginning of padded practices — and Lake’s Washington Huskies received 161 total points, ranking third in the Pac-12 North and sixth in the conference.

Oregon (222 points) and California (176 points) edged UW in the North, while USC (220 points) was the overwhelming favorite in the South. A total of five teams received first-place votes — Oregon (35), USC (32), Utah (4), Cal (3) and Arizona State (2).

Oregon (21 votes) was also unsurprisingly picked to win the Pac-12 championship game, topping USC (15), ASU (1) and Utah (1).

Under first-year head coach Nick Rolovich, Washington State garnered just 58 votes — ranking last in the Pac-12 North and 11th in the conference (one vote better than Arizona).

In Chris Petersen’s sixth and final season as UW’s head coach, the Huskies finished 8-5 overall but just 4-5 in the Pac-12 — ranking second in the North and tied for fourth in the conference. UW will open an abbreviated seven-game 2020 season against Cal on Nov. 7, with a new head coach (Lake), a new offensive coordinator (John Donovan) and a new starting quarterback.

The media has correctly predicted the Pac-12 conference champion in 31 of 59 previous polls. The Huskies are certainly hoping that trend won’t continue in 2020.

who has any idea how good UW is without any info on the next QB? not to mention losing their two best front 7 defenders in Tryon and Levi who opted out. fortunately there is depth behind those guys, but the QB is a huge question, could fall anywhere on the scale of horrid to great.

No debating that. My point was just how fast it happened. I really wonder how different things might have been if Pete hadn't suddenly lost interest?

But, to your point, that wouldn't have changed the fact that we seem to have to rebuild the defense all the time because for awhile they just kept going to the NFL. BUT, doesn't this happen all over the nation? Who would have thought that after all the stud QBs we have recruited, we would be worried about QB? If that is the case, maybe we should have pulled a WSU or Oregon and raided Eastern Washington or heavily pursued Grad transfers?

i think they should have tapped the grad transfer pool - i was all over it for the Stanford guy, seemed like a perfect fit. a lot more accomplished than the one that did sign. not too worried about reloading the D though - this is where that stacked DL class they had gets to step now in the absence of Levi, and Smalls gets his chance with Tryon prepping for the combine.

Can the players that opted out opt back in?

Many are....I haven’t heard any Huskies yet. The only one I remember is the big D Lineman.

Players CAN opt back in (depending on the team of course). Both Tryon and Levi had that option (since the change to play a shortened season) and have decided not to, per the Seattle Times.

Tryon was really good last year, especially the last half. took a while to develop, but really grew into and harnessed that lengthy stature - eager to see if he can continue his success against much better competition on Sundays. Levi i dont have near as much hope for.
