Who knows maybe if they hadn't stupidly promoted him in 95 we would have a few World Series titles and he would have retired a mariner
What would have been awesome is if the M's FO had the intelligence to move Arod to 3b in the minors and kept Vizquel....If they had done that they would not have made another stupid trade when they traded Tino, Nellie, and Jim Mecir for Russ Davis and Sterling Hitchcock. The '96 M's then would have had an infield of Tino, Cora, Omar, and Arod with Bone, Junior and Rich Amaral in the OF and Edgar at DH. We also would not have had to trade for 3b Dave Hollins and given up on little known David Arias( aka David Ortiz).

Ahhh what could have been

He is two for three now. And is batting average actually went down from 588 to 579. LOL
A .666 performance will not reduce a BA down from .588. Not sure what math you're looking at, but probably the .588 was after 2 hits and then the third AB was an out and brought it down to .579.

That's one of those what-ifs we never think of, what if we'd made room for A-Rod and Vizquel? Vizquel couldn't hit yet but he was already a Gold Glover, and they not only traded him for peanuts, but at the time it was known to be peanuts. The FO made some really dumb trades in that period.

It would have made the late 90s Mariners a little better, but those teams' Achilles Heel was way too many awful pitchers.

So, they lost David Ortiz, Omar Vizquel, Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr, and Alex Rodriguez (either through their own stupidity or the player wanting out of Seattle) and still won 116 games while all those players were performing at a high level for other teams.

I guess the point is that John Olerud (5.2 WAR), Carlos Guillen (3.3 WAR), Freddy Garcia (4.1 WAR), Mike Cameron (5.9 WAR), and David Bell (3.3 WAR) were pretty darned good replacements for those guys in 2001.

And then there were the additions of Brett Boone (8.8 WAR), Ichiro (7.7 WAR), and Jeff Nelson (1.3 WAR) that year, and Mark McLemore (3.5 WAR), Stan Javier (2.8 WAR), Arthur Rhodes (2.5 WAR), Aaron Sele (2.6 WAR), and Kazuhiro Sasaki (1.1 WAR) the year before. Gillick was a master-mind.

The 588 was after 1 for 1 and then he finished going 1 for 2 to just bring it down from 588- to 579 since it's only 500

He is now hitting 607. 17 for 28. That's pretty damn good batting average for slow pitch softball and he is an 18 year old playing in a league where the average age is 22 years old
