Isn’t that a backhanded way of admitting that their off-season plan was an utter failure?
No, you missing the forest through the trees. Nothing in the moves could have fixed this:

Player 2022 OPS+ 2023 OPS+ Loss
Cal. 122//99//-23
France 125//116//-9
Saurez 129//82//-47
Julio 146//109//-37
Moore 122// (played 1st game yesterday)
Haggerty 116//55//-71
Teo 126//97//-29
Wong 118//25//-93
AJ 91//55//-36

=-316

Criticizing management for a majority of the team playing well below their norms is something you can not predict. I find it nauseating to hear folks around here trying to say say they were smarter and would have picked for moves that all worked out.

They would have got Luis A 161 OPS+ vs Wong, They would have gave up Gilbert or Kirby and :
Not signed busted up Verlander 98 ERA+
Not signed Jacob DeGrom
Not signed Carlos R he is going to get injured and not pitch in 23

You would have signed Clayton K away from LAD 132 ERA+
Or C. Bassett 125 ERA+

No to AJ
No to Carlos C. 84 OPS+
No to Trea T 85 OPS+
No to 98 OPS+ Teo trade/
Yes to Judge 198 OPS+
No to Xander B 105 OPS+
No to Jose Abreu 50 OPS+
Yes to Rizzo 132 OPS+

While I recognize we can’t fix Jerry’s off season fubar what I would like to start with is getting a legit lead off hitter who can get on and cause problems. JP simply does put any pressure on the pitcher or defense as he is a mediocre runner. Maybe Cabs could fill that role but it’s a gamble. I would go after that type of player regardless of position. I would then go after a couple of contact hitters who consistently put the ball in play. Timeline=when possible. One piece at a time

I agree with is but would say now or trade deadline is t the time, prospect cost is always a premium for a team desperate like the M’s . Off season is time. Our playoff chance is 15%presently

Their mistake was instead of adding La Stella and Pollock, they needed a couple middle of the order bats because everyone else in the lineup is having to be something they're not.

Crawford- Bad leadoff hitter, great nine hitter
France- is a 6 batter on a good team
Julio- shouldn't have been counted on as a leadoff or moto hitter, would look great in the 5-6 spots until he settles into the league
Kelenic- trending downwards, fine 6 or 7 batter in the lineup
Suarez- is a 6 batter on a good team
Hernandez- is a 6 batter on a good team
Cal- is perfectly suited as a 6 batter, shouldn't have been thrust into moto role

With Wong and Pollock rounding out that lineup, it's obvious what's missing. Their middle of the order hitters.

Instead of getting those they went with some platoon bums to save money.

That's how one player helps fix something like this. It doesn't force others to be what they're not in the lineup.

You can say it doesn't matter, but look at these guys.

They're trying to use depth to win instead of adding the flashy players. Unfortunately, in an 18 inning game, sometimes you just need one guy to bust out the spirit fingers.

If they had added Schwarber last year, we probably get farther in the playoffs and even as much as he's sucked this year he'd still be a massive improvement over some of this seasons slop.

Ok. Add Judge and Rizzo, move Ty to 2B, DH Teo. Here's your lineup lol:

1. CF Julio: .246/.303/.439/.742 109 OPS+
2. 2B France: .272/.341/.417/.758 116 OPS+
3. RF Judge: .291/.404/.674/1.078 194 OPS+
4. 1B Rizzo: .289/.363/.477/.840 132 OPS+
5. DH Teo: .243/.283/.417/.700 97 OPS+
6. LF Kelenic: .269/.330/.491/.821 131 OPS+
7. C Cal: .216/.293/.411/.703 99 OPS+
8. 3B Geno: .210/.310/.321/.631 82 OPS+
9. SS Crawford: .240/.345/.340/.685 98 OPS+

Now subtract:

Wong: .153/.246/.178/.424 25 OPS+
Pollock: .160/.229/.319/.548 55 OPS+

And you don't think this team all of a sudden becomes WAY better lol? Judge/Rizzo also likely elevate the numbers of everyone else around where Wong and Pollock drag others down.

Rizzo and Judge were just as available to the M's as they were to the Yankees if the cash talks. Cept the M's don't even try. M's payroll would increase by $41.5 million, putting them 12th in baseball. Not even top 10...

Judge would have welcomed the leverage with the Yankees.... they are still batting Schwarber leadoff

If the M's had offered Judge 8/$400 mill I bet you he's wearing an M's jersey.

Btw... Judge has an OPS near 1.400 on the road this year. He has a career OPS of 1.243 at T-mobile over 19 games, his 2nd highest OPS total at any AL stadium.

(But hitters don't want to come here)

I don't think judge wanted to...the Yankees matched the giants offer, the Padres had a $400 mil ten year offer on the table. Judge wanted to stay a Yankee. It does go beyond dollars in a contract. It was more valuable being a Yankee on multiple levels.

From before he re-signed
.To be honest, there's no better place to play, No other place I would really ever want to play, just based on how the fans have embraced me, how they brought me in and treated me as one of their own. It's incredible, getting a chance to play at Yankee Stadium ... That would be a wish of mine, a goal of mine, to finish my career as a Yankee, but you never know what the cards hold. But, if it was up to me, I would be a Yankee for the next 10 years, for sure."
There were FAs the mariners could have gone after, I don't see justice as the most realistic target

Lol that quote is some BS fluff aimed to appease the fans.

The Padres offered him 12/$415. Doubt he wants to play until he's 42 or make $6 million less per year. Or get taxed in Cali where the income tax is 3% higher at the highest bracket.

How is it more valuable being a Yankee? Julio has been on the cover of everything for the past year and there's no state income tax.

Truth is, the M's FO is cheap and will never make the moves necessary to win a WS. It's just the truth.
