Flexen was DFAd. If I he wasn’t traded mariners pay him for nothing. Gott is a FA at the end of the year, and I don’t think mariners make the playoffs. Mariners loses nothing, save money, and anything they get out of the new lefty is a bonus.

Now just do something worthwhile with the money.

He signed a 1 year deal. Does he get arbitration or something?
Trevor Gott entered the season with four years and 57 days of MLB service:

Gott presumably has one more arbitration season.

He won't have 6 years of service. The Baseball Reference page says he isn't a FA until the after the 2024 season.

More money for Stanton. Nice job Dipoto. You follow orders well. Dump salary abs sign no real free agents. Sign one in our lefty former Ct young to show “hey we did something in free agency” move. Then no other move.

Cut payroll and make cash. That’s what the Ms do.

Only way this trade makes sense is if they're planning on taking on payroll at the deadline and are freeing up some cash.

Team is at the prime opportunity to add some veteran contracts to reduce the prospect haul sent back.

I still think taking a swing at Arenado would be the best move this team could make. Dude has gone .902 // .967 // 1.021 in May, June, July.

Like I said they bought Gott for $4M. The guy they gave us was just in the trade so it would approved my MLB.

So they saved roughly half of Flexen's 2023 salary ($4 mil) and half of Trevor Gott's as well ($600K). In exchange, both roster spots can be filled by minimum salary pitchers for the rest of the year or roughly $720K. So the combined savings for the year is $3.8-3.9 million. I expect we'll see Teoscar traded at the first opportunity. No doubt they're looking at falling revenues from declining ticket sales and people canceling their Fubo subscriptions, so there will be pressure on Jerry to cut costs where he can. But beyond Teoscar, it's hard to see who can be moved. Maybe someone could use Suarez, but they're unlikely to want to pick up next year's salary. Wong and Pollock are sunk costs at this point.

I think it's possible Sewald and France could be moved. Both are on very affordable salaries this year, but are arb eligible next year, so you never know. This will be an interesting test to see how much power Jerry has to keep his team together in the face of the team wanting to lower costs.
