Jerry's Draft Grades

Post by D-train » Sat Dec 09, 2023 12:10 pm

One thing that people point to that Jerry has done well is Draft and Develop. Especially pitching. Let's take a look at how he has done.

2016. Total WAR 0.3 Grade D
Comments: Jerry got unlucky here with Lewis getting hurt. That saves him from an F grade. The rest of this draft is straight trash

2017: Total WAR -2.2 Grade F
Comments: The one bright spot in this draft is Sears but alas our brilliant Jerry traded him for Nick Rumbelow so I am replacing JPs 3.3 WAR with the -0.4 WAR that Nick put up. Horrible draft that not only cost us in terms of zero MLB players but the millions Jerry flushed on White for no reason.

2018: Total WAR 14.7 Grade B+
Comments: Jerry finally struck gold twice with Gilbert and Cal. Also not pictured is 33rd round pick Murfee who put up 1.4 WAR.

2019: Total WAR 8.2 Grade B-
Comments: Jerry once again hit on a TOR starter in Kirby. Given he wasn't taken until 20 this was the best pick of the DiPoto Era. Also got Williamson but alas he was traded and another pretty good late round pick in Marlowe.

2020: Total WAR 0.0 Grade D+
Comments: This is the Covid shortened draft. Jerry went to the well again going with his 3rd straight college pitcher but with a 6th overall pick seems to have whiffed. At best, IF he stays healthy Hancock seems to be a Back end starter. There is still some hope for DeLoach but if he doesn't pan out this is a bad draft.

2021: Total WAR 1.8 Grade B
Comments: Once again Jerry seems to have scored with Miller and Woo. Arroyo help land us Castillo so that was a good pick. Ford is highly regarded by many but I have massive doubts that his bat will play in the Big leagues and he MUST stick at catcher to have a chance.

The 2022 and 2023 can't really be graded at this time. Just too early. Cole Young looks like a pretty good pick as does Colt Emerson but who knows. Locklear has a shot to be a pretty good hitter.

In summary Jerry had 3 bad drafts and 3 pretty good ones so in conclusion I would say he is about average. So his claim to fame is being average at one of the 3 components of being a GM.

Optimism: He has trended up in drafting high-level pitching in that span

Pessimistic: He still sucks at drafting position players and bats

Really needs to hit on some of the bats he drafted the past 3 drafts especially since we are now broke.

This is so incomplete still, deloach and Hancock are both on the verge of seeing how they will compete, Dollard is great for a 5th rounder in an abbreviated draft, and Phillips is a top prospect. This is not a D+ draft, could even end up being an A
