Dominating or being dominated

Post by DavidGee24 » Sat May 18, 2019 6:07 pm

It's so weird how the team is either mauling other teams or getting mauled. Even with the Red Sox it was two completely different teams, and in the one series they split with the Rangers they lost the last two games 29-2. One nice thing about baseball is the unpredictability of the game but not with this team.

It's what happens when you lead MLB in runs scored AND runs against.

That makes sense, the crummy teams can't shut down the home run assault while the good teams exploit the home run mentality.

They've played 47 games. Unfortuantely, I think the last 30 are the most characteristic of where the team is at. Hard to say what is going on exaclty but I do think the league made some adjustments in going right after the Mariner hitters with first pitch strikes, etc. The batters were good at laying off the first pitch and working counts early on. Not so much anymore. For whatever reason, the players haven't counter adjusted. You add that to poor defense, a poor pen and poor base running and it is what it is.

Since April 12, they have lost 7 games by five or more runs and only won 3. Before April 12 they were 4-0 in games decided by five or more runs. And there have been a lot of close games, as well. There have been 27 games decided by two or fewer runs. The only thing that looks sustainable is the blowoutability of Mariners pitching, so I wouldn't expect much of a drop off in those 5+-run losses. Replacing Felix with Leblank should help somewhat, though.

I have often associated this song with the Mariners over the years, but especially here in 2019.

After Verlander and Cole shut down the offense, it’s disappeared.

I still believe that Zunino’s absence has hurt the overall pitching performance.

Last year the team was 24 games over .500 with him behind the plate.

His anemic offense is beside the point.

Little question the M’s would have a better record without the trade.

The Red Sox won the World Series with a catcher hitting .207.
