OT German U Boats of the coast of Boston WWII

Post by D-train » Wed May 08, 2024 8:26 pm

Had lunch with the neighbors today and the guy is a Pilot boat captain. Said he was a part of a Treasure hunting operation off the coast of Cape Cod for a ship that was sunk by a German U Boat. It was full of hundreds of million/Billion now of jewels and gold and other valuables.

I thought the guy was full of shit. There were no German U boats that came all the way across the Atlantic. So I thought. Did you guys know this. I usually know my history but this is the first I have EVER heard of it.

So Crazy because we all have heard about Pearl Harbor a million times but NEVER heard about his operation that took out more Allied ships than Pearl Harbor??? Just insane to me.

I knew that there was a lot of action in the St. Lawrence and up and down the Gaspe peninsula and around Anticosti island. U-boats routinely patrolled these waters and sank all kinds of vessels. I only know that because it’s close to where I grew up, and it somehow figured into my high school history classes. I remember being told that by the end of WW II, Canada had one of the largest navies in the world.

And let’s not forget the class Steven Spielberg movie 1941 with John Belushi - the premise of which was a Japanese sub wreaking havoc on Santa Barbara.

The events were loosely based in an actual attach by a Japanese sub in WW II.

Whoops - I referenced this movie before I clicked on by his link. Sorry D-T. It was classic Belushi. And Ackroyd.
