I wonder if this will change anything...
Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith and his wife, Kathy Surace-Smith, have purchased a stake in the Mariners ownership group, the first new partners to join the franchise since Ken Griffey Jr. in 2021. They are just the third new partners since the ownership formed in 1992.

Batting order suggestion:

1. Rojas
2. DMO
3. Raley
4. Cal
5. Julio
6. wad of chewed gum (France?) Nice, needed HR, Ty!
7. old, sweaty jock strap (Haniger?)
8. still warm cadaver (Urias Heep/Haggs?)
9. JP
I know there aren't a ton of options, but right now, how does our best lineup have Garver in it? Dude went 0 for 4 last night with three Ks to drop to .174/.287/.347/.634
1 reason. He is a better DH than Haniger.

I'm not sure it will change that much.

Griffey is worth around $100 million, Smith $130 million.

They don't seem like investors who will dump 30% of their net worth into signing expensive players.

More so... "here's $10 million, turn it into $50 million Stanton - plz and thanks."

They'll get that with the appreciation of the franchise

Exactly.

Which is why I don't see them joining the ownership group as impactful.

It's an investment, not anything meant to make the club more competitive...

I wonder what the logistics of the payroll approval process is. Stanton picks a number and they all vote on it with the owners with the biggest shares having more weight?

I don't think any of these people really care that much about baseball.

They averaged about 38,000 fans a game this weekend on a bottom half payroll.

"We're committed to bringing championship baseball to Seattle" is about the same as political speak. I think everyone is fairly well committed to the vision of keeping their investment cheap but the return heavy. They'll follow Stanton anywhere so long as it makes them wealthier.

I think the owners would be sensitive if the formula was failing but it's not. They are in first place and getting tremendous turnout for the games.
