Ketel marte signed another extension, looks like another very reasonable deal for the dbacks
The Marte trade is quickly looking like another Jerry failure...
So you don't think Haniger will have a bounce back season? lol

That was a good trade for both teams, just in terms of the players involved. We got three good seasons out of Haniger, two good seasons out of Segura, and they got little out of Walker but Marte's had a nice career with a couple great seasons. Nobody got fleeced there, especially considering that Marte didn't show anything in Seattle that would indicate that he'd become the player he is.

It wasn't a total fleecing but it certainly wasn't a good trade for the M's. Marte and Walker combined have given the D-Backs 31.6 WAR. Hanniger and Segura combined for 22.3 for the M's. Money is roughly the same. M's paid Haniger and Segura 60.7 Million. Arizona paid Walker and Marte 63.5 Million through the end of last year.

I would call that a better deal, although we could add in JP Crawford's 17.4 WAR who we got for Segura. I just didn't bring it up because I really don't want to type that guy's name right now. :D And Marte put up a .610 OPS with one home run in 2016, so who saw that coming? Just mind-blowing that three years later he was one of the best hitters in the game.

I think Marte was showing signs of his talent, remember being disappointed when they traded him. Marte is like the poster child for being patient with a guys power. Some here if they don't see it right away they conclude it's not there but home run power is something that develops. Marte was a switch hitter with a nice compact swing. In 2015 in 56 games he has 2 homeruns but he also has 14 doubles. He falls off in 2016 with added playing time but that happens. I'm probably too optimistic as opposed to giving up on a guy. But Marte wasn't a guy just swinging for the fences. He had the qualities of a nice sweet swing and being a switch hitter it takes time, that's why the dbacks wanted him

Marte always showed very good contact hitting ability and resistance to strikeouts. I remember watching his minor league stats with interest for those reasons. Contact hitters with good strikezone discipline have always been sort of a rare breed in Marinerland. Then, as a major leaguer, he made an adjustment and started elevating the ball more. I imagine there were coaches in the Mariners organization that thought that adjustment would come at some point.

It's always been my belief that, in the minor leagues, the ability to make contact and to control the strikezone are more accurate predictors of major league success than shear raw power. This is why I don't freak out when a prospect like Colt Emerson doesn't immediately start hitting balls into the parking lots of minor league stadiums. It's the same with Harry Ford. This is also why I'm more subdued about Lazaro Montes.
