What would it take?
OK, not saying I'd do a trade for Giancarlo Stanton, but that well regarded baseball rag, The Times of India, says there is a possibility the Yanks could trade Stanton to the M's. Personally, I doubt it would happen, but the M's do have the arms to make a trade and not hurt their rotation.

FWIW Baseball Trade Values assigns 35-year-old Giancarlo Stanton a negative $52.3 million trade value with 2.7 years and $57.1 million remaining on his contract:
https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/188354
That's a steep price for Stanton, whom Steamer and ZiPS project with 0.7 and 0.5 WAR the remaining of the season in 47 and 46 games. As points of reference, Steamer and ZiPS project Rowdy Tellez with 0.6 and 0.5 WAR in 66 and 93 games, Mitch Garver with 0.4 and 0.7 WAR in 48 and 69 games, and Leody Taveras with 0.6 and 1.4 WAR in 34 and 106 games.
The Mariners are currently tied for second in the American League with an OPS+ of 115 while, buoyed by the last four games, ranking ninth in the league with an ERA+ of 101:

It would take a mistake by the Mariners.

Agree with all that but he is actually owed over $80M which makes it even worse. Also he is injured now and hasn't even started his rehab assignment so the 46-47 games will likely be pretty accurate.harmony wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 3:16 pmFWIW Baseball Trade Values assigns Giancarlo Stanton a negative $52.3 million trade value with 2.7 years and $52.3 million remaining on his contract:

With all the injury issues the Mariners need to be 8 deep in the rotation this season.

Re: What would it take?
You guys all know teams often eat the salary themselves to make the trades work. Some players are getting paid by 4 teams at once. Each time they get traded their former team is absorbing some of the salary. I'm not familiar with the negative trade value statistic, but sounds like it's basically performance vs. salary. The flip of this is also true if the guy is performing way above his salary, but usually teams just hold on to those guys. The cash on a trade can also be evened out by simply including prospects. So, like instead of absorbing Stantons 80 million you could package an extra 4 prospects with the deal.
The real question is would you want Stanton on your team, and I think the answer is no. DiPoto has an obvious "nice guys" concept of team building. I can't say for sure how much of a jerk Stanton is, but pretty sure he's kinda known for that. I think the nice guys approach makes the team likable for the fans, and it also helps foster the playing for each other clubhouse that helps win baseball games.
So, the answer above... it would take a mistake by the Mariners is a great answer imo.
We'll see how things hold up, but right now the offense is good. One of the top run producing offenses in MLB. Kirby, Logan, and Bryce should all be back it's going to take a colossal fail at this point to miss the post season. Most likely Julio will heat up and this team will be playing in the post season. That being said I do like the idea of adding offense. Trade deadline and also next offseason. I don't want Stanton, though.

I really don't want to be an asshole... but my God... please exercise better media literacy.
The Times of India is not saying that there is a "possibility" of the M's trading for Stanton. The article is referencing the reference of (
) a hack Yankees fan stupid fantasy article of 3 trades he'd like to see the Mariners make and then sensationalizing it make it seem like a legitimate source. Crappy websites do this often... they are given crap articles from crap websites to promote and create lame pieces w. no credibility to drive readership.
Please... read this gem of an analysis... and then ask yourself, how on God's green earth did this kid make it through Syracuse, supposedly one of the top sports journalism schools in the country, and leave with the both the analytical and writing abilities of a 9th grader writing his very first sports beat for the school paper?
"Giancarlo Stanton is still waiting to make his 2025 debut, recovering from injuries in both of his elbows. At this point in his career, Stanton presents an unfortunate truth. He will likely never make it through a full season ever again while playing in MLB. However, that doesn't make him undesirable for a team looking for a surplus of talent, like the Mariners.
The biggest value Stanton provides is his greatness in the postseason. He outplayed almost every other Yankee during their run to the World Series last season. He showed nothing that would hint that he couldn't do that for another team if they got him to the playoffs. However, the Yankees might no longer need him thanks to the emergence of Ben Rice. When Stanton returns, Aaron Boone simply doesn't have enough at-bats to go around, which makes Stanton potentially expendable.
The former MVP is a risky addition, but Seattle is the team to take that chance. Adding him bumps Jorge Polanco back to his original position at third base, but the Mariners would have capable offensive players at every position. For a team with a middling offense, adding Stanton could propel them to even greater heights.
The Mariners have never been to the World Series in franchise history. This year's team has a chance to make history, and the front office owes it to them and themselves to explore every available option on the market. If they find the right move, it could secure them a championship in October."
1. No reference of money involved.
2. No reference of players involved in a trade.
3. No understanding of the M's financial history or strategy.
4. Looking at it through the eyes of a Yankees fan b/c he doesn't understand that Stanton is wholly untradeable.
5. Doesn't know that Polanco isn't playing in the field b/c he is injured and thinks adding Stanton would move him back to 3rd.
6. Thinks the M's adding an oft-injured slug = doing what they can to "owe themselves" a shot at a WS.
7. Thinks that Stanton performing well in the playoffs last year means anything.
8. Either doesn't know or doesn't reference Stanton having a no-trade clause.

I'd give them Donovan Solano and Mitch Garver if the Yankees agreed to take on 60 Million of Stantons salary.

Definitely. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spo ... 271590.cmsIt would take our Stanton paying the over $80M he is owed into his late 30s for a guy that is always injured. His trade value is negative $52M.
