No we shouldn't trade our starters now until we know the guys in the minors are good enough to be in the rotation in the big leaguesGL_Storm wrote: ↑Tue Aug 19, 2025 6:47 pmWe should trade all of these bums!

I think they should trade Castillo if we can and get a free agent starter for a year. I don't want to see what Castillo looks like in 2027. They considered trading him last year, and he will be out of his no trade clause, so lets see if they try in the offseason.

Yes. Castillo still has some value, but he's more of a 4th or 5th starter at this point and so they should probably try to offload that salary.

We should definitely stick with Gilbert, Woo, Miller and Kirby. All have had successful seasons as big leaguers and all are still young. Those are the kind of guys you should have faith in.
As for Castillo, he's at least still an average to above-average starting pitcher. Nobody in the organization has proven to be able to take his spot and you'd have to acquire from outside the organization to replace him.

Re: The M's Rotation is smoke and Mirrors
DiPoto figured his rotation would be just as good as they were last year. Thus he did next to nothing to improve the offense during both the off season and during the 2024 season. Then he did nothing to improve the pitching this offseason and should have not let his good 3B go elsewhere. Now, this season is this season. The 2025 pitching has regressed and our offense suffered early on. And who would have predicted that Cal would be this good? Still, this is the Mariners and they wouldn't know how to win the division if the lives of all their fans depended on it.
Re: The M's Rotation is smoke and Mirrors
If they do keep Castillo, I hope some adjustments make their way to his pitching repertoire. Maybe a new pitch? Maybe a different grip on the slider? Let's figure something out. The fastball is actually still pretty good but he needs at least one more pitch that he can go to for outs, especially vs. lefties.

RHP Spencer Turnbull was released from his milb contract by the Cubs today as he triggered an opt-out clause.
In limited appearances in 2024 he was quite effective.
He's royally sucked in the minors in 2025 but I wouldn't mind offering him a minor league contract.
Toronto is essentially paying his salary so not much to lose there. He is a free agent after the season but if the M's pitching coach's braintrust could find a little magic to get him on the right track, perhaps he's consider signing next year with the Seattle. He could be given an opt out clause again.
He's mostly been a starter but maybe Turnbull is more suited in the pen.
I remember his rookie season in 2019 with the Tigers he was 3-17 for a 47-114 league-worst team. But he had a league average 4.61 ERA with 30 starts. Somehow he had a 2.8 WAR that season.
Is he worth a shot on the Blue Jay's dime? If nothing more, you gotta love his full name, Spencer Ketcham Turnbull.

Fangraphs runs their pitching WAR on FIP which is really fucking stupid.rockycola wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 6:30 amRHP Spencer Turnbull was released from his milb contract by the Cubs today as he triggered an opt-out clause.

Fangraphs thinks Bazardo was a better pitcher last year with an ERA near 5 in 27 innings than this year with an ERA in the 2’s in over 60 innings because of FIP.
There’s not a planet where anyone can take that seriously.
