There's a psychological aspect to it too.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 3:54 pmseems to me cal is hitting pretty high in the lineup. And it would seem to me the lineup should be a function of runs generated, how it works as it flips. I am gonna guess dipoto is running calculations for how the lineup should work as opposed to dan scratching his butt deciding to hit Cal second. So even though it seems odd to me I think they are operating with more information than we have. Here's a lineup optimization tool online. You enter the lineup statistically and then it runs thousands of simulated games. I have to guess Dipoto has come up with something along those lines

I just wonder, do they talk to the players and try to determine where they prefer or feel most comfortable being in the lineup or do they just look at their career numbers regardless of where they batted in the order? I'm guessing it's the latter.

LOL you say they have more info than we do and then post something that allows and fan to do exactly what you are suggesting they do.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 3:54 pmseems to me cal is hitting pretty high in the lineup. I have no idea why they are batting Cal second. I wouldn't, maybe if i invested in that tool i who knows. My point is they are working off their own information, I would be more interested in an explanation than just dismissing it. I am gonna guess their information is data driven but again, I don't know. Maybe Dan does just fill out the lineups, could be.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 4:22 pmLOL you say they have more info than we do and then post something that allows and fan to do exactly what you are suggesting they do.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 3:54 pmseems to me cal is hitting pretty high in the lineup. Dan definitely doesn't fill out the lineup. That is why Jerry left the Angels. Because he couldn't dictate the lineup among other things. Seems they move guys around based on how they are trending. JP stays at leadoff if he is hitting and dropped near the bottom if he isn't. That has happened multiple times. Cal is likely hitting 2nd because he has a .351 OBP and Julio's is only .316. Pretty simple.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 4:50 pmI have no idea why they are batting Cal second. I wouldn't, maybe if i invested in that tool i who knows. Yeah, I do think it comes from dipoto, I also don't think dipoto pulls it out of his ass either. I seriously doubt Jerry Dipoto does anything simple

Sure.
Batting positions are typically associated with your talent level. If you hit at a certain spot in the lineup, you (the athlete) have an understanding of what the team is expecting of you and the pressure is different. Athletes also grow fond of hitting in certain positions. Barry Bonds, for instance, always hit 3rd or 4th and the numbers reflect a big boost in production at those spots in the lineup.
Athletes are notorious preparers. Timing plays a part. If you know you're batting 1-3... it's a different preparation than hitting 7-9 where you might not get your first licks until the 3rd inning. Same goes for 1, 2, 3 in the lineup...
Athletes aren't robots that you just stick in an arena. They're humans with very real psychological quirks.
No matter how much Harmony wishes that wasn't the case.

Yeah, some guys might be more comfortable hitting leadoff than others, that of course needs to be taken into consideration. And Bonds had a preference where he hit, I remember the stories but that of course was Bonds. Sorry I don't buy looking at splits and then deducing where a guy should hit as if there is something mystical about a guy hitting 200 points higher sixth instead of fifth. I don't believe much in splits to begin with. Its interesting bringing up preparation, and expectation. There seems a lot of discussion here about moving guys up and down the lineup, basically trying to chase if they are hot or not. So and so has been hot for the last three weeks he needs to move up, so and so needs to move down. I do think that goes against the concept of guys feeling comfortable

I was. David was. Both played baseball at a high level.
I am a former professional golfer.
I cared a lot about where I hit in a lineup. There's things I do on the golf course that a computer can't explain that I feel help boost my performance.
