They agreed when they moved that the Sonics' history stays in Seattle.DanielVogelbach wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2026 9:03 pmOKC is reportedly going to give the history back. 1979 Championship banner will go up in Seattle. All historical statistics will go back to Seattle.

Screw the NBA. Their product sucks. Not interested in watching a bunch of guys take 5 gather steps and then launch 30 footers all game while nobody plays defense.

Yeah I guess OKC took the shared history but it is already pre arranged they will cede it back if Seattle gets a team.DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2026 10:38 pm

Re: OT: Supersonics
The NBA became dead to me the day the Supers left town. I haven't watched a minute of that sport since not will I ever again even if they paid me to.

I'm having a difficult time giving a shit. I remember watching the Sonics win the title. It was awesome.DanielVogelbach wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2026 8:59 pmNot guarantee but probably 95% chance. Owners voted unanimously to start the bidding process for Vegas and Seattle only.
Kraken ownership is apparently all positioned. Vegas has multiple ownership groups that will try to outbid each other.
The bids will come in and they'll get approved. Expansion draft after 2027-2028 season. First Supersonics game Fall of 2028.
I was away from WA State for some of the better later teams. The NBA is not what it once was.
WTF is the "bidding process"? Who are they buying an expansion team from? I guess the other stinky rich NBA
owners just for the privilege of joining their elitist club? I hope the product is good and I eat my words, but
I'm skeptical.

Re: OT: Supersonics
Whether they are gone or not the name will live on. Whoever purchases the franchise isn't required to use the name but they would be idiots not to. The supersonics are going to be a goldmine. Which would you rather be, Vegas trying to build a brand around a still undecided new NBA name or get handed something as cool and retro as supersonics? It took forever to get around to it but it was always going to happen. The NBA wasnt going to ignore that value forever.
There's supposed to be some sort of sharing arrangement with OKC but they've never been interested in that. So the supersonics would start up again with like a 25 year gap.
I'm marveling at the money making possibilities. This isn't about some aging BB fans in Seattle, heck there's nostalgia for the sonics in the Philippines. It is a remarkable brand that's just been sitting there all this time. It will be interesting what it goes for and the comparison to Vegas. You have polar opposite situations. Vegas will have the freedom to build whatever they want but it's going to have to be builtHowever, the Oklahoma City Thunder don't claim any Seattle history as their own. The Thunder's official record books begin with the 2008-09 season, meaning Seattle's new franchise will take sole possession of the Sonics' history.
While we don't know with certainty that the new Seattle franchise will be named the SuperSonics, it's hard to find any reason why they wouldn't gladly adopt that name and franchise history. We are in an era of nostalgia, especially for the 90s, and new ownership in Seattle will be gifted a golden goose in the form of bringing back Sonics gear and retro logos -- something rarely afforded to an expansion franchise.
It took years before the Charlotte Bobcats could take the Hornets name and history back from New Orleans, but Seattle will have the Sonics waiting for them from the jump. That's a huge advantage. And while new leadership in Seattle will still have to prove it can build a winner to create long-term success, they'll have an immediate boost that not every expansion team gets.

Yeah, I don't watch much NBA myself. I'll sometimes watch playoffs once they get down to the final four teams. I do like this Anthony Edwards kid. He reminds me of Jordan.trharder wrote: ↑Thu Mar 26, 2026 3:24 amI'm having a difficult time giving a shit. I remember watching the Sonics win the title. Edwards is only 23 so all of those highlights are in a 4 year span.
I don't really watch that much sports in general. The Mariners and Seahawks just had incredible runs but I only followed the scores until the very end of the season when I started watching games. I wish I had unlimited time. Then I would be able to watch the regular season, but that's taken a backseat to other priorities. I do think MLB and NFL have the best regular seasons. NHL and NBA it's really all about the playoffs. I remember in my youth, though, I was always waiting for Sports Center to see Supersonics highlights during the regular season. I loved them in the 90s. I graduated High School in 1996 right before the Finals vs the Bulls.
All of the leagues have an elitist owner's club. Buying an existing team carries a similar price tag. The bidding process for Vegas is going to involve multiple groups and arena proposals. I think for Seattle it's just going to be the Kraken ownership group and of course playing in Climate Pledge Arena. (worst arena name possible) But, there should really be nothing getting in the way. It's not official until they approve the bid, but it's looking very much like the Supersonics will be back for the 2028-2029 season.
They'll probably be mediocre out of the gate, though. Expansion draft plus a few picks in the regular draft. Still, I expect the arena to be going nuclear for their return and it's nice to finally stop wondering if it's ever going to happen. I'm feeling quite nostalgic about it. I'll definitely be tuning in for their first home game that's gonna be crazy after a 20 year absence. Really unprecedented in the sports world.
