Piggybacking

Post by Donn Beach » Thu May 28, 2026 2:33 am

It just occurred to me, they let Miller go five innings in the first piggyback situation. That being said I wouldn't make too much out of it. To drains point, Wilson has admitted to not communicating well with him. From this article things are getting ironed out. The fact is it's been working, both Castillo and Miller have been pitching well. At this point they say they are continuing with it. Maybe Wilson just set Castillo up to add a little fire! lol
Dipoto said, “While still not an ideal solution, I am confident that we were able to more clearly communicate the current situation and plan moving forward.”
Seattle Mariners Manager Dan Wilson said, “Certainly, communicating it and everybody understanding is paramount, for sure.” [/quote
Wilson said, ““I thought both those guys threw the ball incredibly well. Their willingness to do it, just for the team, and the way that they’re going out there is tremendous.”

After the meetings with both pitchers, a better understanding exists of what will occur moving forward within the clubhouse. Keeping the Mariners culture intact seemed vital after Monday’s game and the comments that followed. Many thought that would be the end of the piggyback plan but the Mariners seem to believe it is still the way to move forward.

Castillo? Well then you need to keep his pitch count up.

Jerry needs to go all in on his hair brained idea. Bring up Anderson and Sloan and you can have a set of 4 piggybacks. They'd be throwing less innings so going on a 3 days rest shouldn't be a big deal.

Woo-Gilbert
Kirby-Hancock
Miller-Anderson
Castillo-Sloan.

If you can count on 7-8 innings out of your piggybacks, you wouldn't need as much in the bullpen. Heck you could set up piggybacks in the bullpen too. Ferrer-Brash could pitch one game and then Speier-Munoz could pitch the next game. I am telling you it would revolutionize baseball and Jerry would finally get the recognition as a genius that he so desperately is trying to show.

Yeah, ever since La Russa tried it with the Athletics I've always been curious about a different way to construct pitching staffs. I'd love to try something really wacky but this is probably as close as anybody is going to get to it
