It be nice if its just too many fastballs but I get the feeling it's more complicated than that. He says he's tired of sucking, he's working on it but at this point he doesn't know what the problem is

It is weird because optimizing pitch mix is supposedly one of the things the Pitching Lab excels at....

Here's the quote
“I’m getting pretty tired of trying to come up with reasons or excuses or superlatives,” Woo said after allowing all seven runs. “I’m just tired of sucking. It is what it is. I don’t know. Like I said, I don’t have the answers. I’m looking for them.”

That is 31 earned runs in his last 9 starts. It's almost worse when you realize that in four of those 9 starts? He only gave up 2 Runs. 29 runs in 5 starts. Basically? When it gets tough he shits his pants and they lose. That's because it is taking them over a month to realize he can't just tube fastballs? Come on.

Woo's numbers are pretty interesting. Last year he was special because he limited damage on the road.

This year he's been getting lit up on the Road but even slightly better at Home in 2026 than last year.

Hopefully he gets on track...

I forgot he was the one that was pretty good on the road. That may have been more about matchups, and now we are seeing the reverse luck and he isn't getting the good matchups. It cracks me up how when you listen to the talking heads they talk about inconsistency, but no one mentions the fact that when this pitching is bad? It's generally on the road.

This organization loves fastballs. They especially love the idea of pairing a 4-seam fastball with a sinker in the same AB. You see most (not all) of their pitchers use this combination extensively, and Woo has probably done this better than any of them. There was a clip on YouTube at one point where Pete Woodworth was talking about this like he'd found the holy grail of pitching. But this is also extremely arrogant. The hitters in this league are the best in the world. These are the guys that are managing to survive in this era of pitching dominance, where a 95 mph fastball is considered normal or average and if you top out at 93-94 you might be considered a soft-tosser. I don't care how good your fastball is. If you keep pounding it in the zone and don't use your secondaries, these guys will punish you.

Now, to be fair, Woo is lately starting to use his secondaries somewhat more than he has in the past, which is good to see. But I would argue it's coming too late in the game, that he needs to mix these in more the first two times through the order.
