You're ignoring that every offseason Jerry has 3-5 vacancies on the roster and every offseason he WHIFFS.

Dipoto sucks.

Amirite?
Yessir. #8 in wins while #19 in payroll. Objective and factual.

I'm not ignoring anything. I'm considering the whole process and all the variables. I already detailed the assumptions that you're making with that rhetoric. Polanco was one of those whiffs, right? You're assuming that Jerry thinks those "whiffs" were gonna be world beaters. You're assuming that some other team was willing to make an uneven trade. You're assuming that there's an unlimited amount of free agents available. You're failing consider what the actual alternatives are. You want to sum all the money spent on the fringe players for one guy, well that guy might not be available for agreeable terms. It would be the same damn thing... overpaying. Too many years on the contract. Paying a bunch of money for a bum. So, it's either take a chance of "whiffing" on a player coming off injury or hoping for a bounce back year on a one-year contract or it's do nothing. Plus, you need all 25 guys win win, so funneling all your money into one guy is not necessarily a good play anyway.

Every team is doing the same thing. Every GM is "whiffing" by your measure.

Objectively, over the past 6 years, the Mariners have the 8th most wins with the 19th ranked payroll. That's facts. What you're presenting is just a bunch of baseless assumptions.

That table shows that the mariners are 16th in $/win from 2021-2026.

To me, the main source of frustration has been the organization's unwillingness to "go for it" during what has been characterized by many as a "window of contention" due to the youth (i.e. affordability) of its pitching staff. Jerry attempted to couch this approach in palatable terms with his oft- maligned 54% "speech" but we all know how poorly that went off. The question is how much of that philosophy was his as opposed to something imposed upon him by the ownership, because i think the majority of fans out there would rather see them attempt to build a great team for a couple seasons at the cost of having several bad years (when it has to be torn down) rather than being in contention for a wildcard berth every season and hoping to get lucky against better teams the few times you manage to squeak in. I might be wrong, though, as a very large number of Seattle fans don't seem to give a crap.

Celebrating 50 years as the only team never to appear in the world series. That's the real problem.
This team has never had the all out commitment to go for it. Every other team has been there but this sad sack org.

No reason to change what we have always done?

I agree that Jerry has done a lot of right things. I also agree that he has failed to raise the floor with free agent signings and that it takes to long before they cut their losses with those failed signings.

Spend that 30 million on one very good free agent and fill in those other spots with the farm or with trades.

This off season at least one pitcher needs to be traded, make sure you get real value for that trade.

That's exactly where the problem lies.

Even with all of the success they've had with the cheap players. The pitching, Cal before he got expensive, etc., they were still only 16th out of 30 in $/WAR because of how terrible Dipoto's expensive picks ($2M+ per season) have been.

We don't need them to "go for it". We need Dipoto to get results from the payroll he does have to spend. Or, buhbye. That's the point we're at as we sit 7 games under .500 on 8/23.

That's not what it should be, but with Dipoto in control it's a near-certainty.

They need a President/GM that can identify players that will make the team better at the MLB level with his available payroll. Right now the M's are on pace for 77 wins.

The year Zdrunciek got fired? The team had 76 wins. And they're not trending UP.
