Bruce to Phillies
Re: Bruce to Phillies
A response to a Jay Bruce trade article on the Metsmerized website:
Re: Bruce to Phillies
Dipoto can spin a trade, that's for certain.
If they had taken Churchills' suggestion of DFA'ing Bruce, the M's would have been on the hook for his whole contract minus league minimum.
They're probably getting some middle reliever back, but who cares, that was just money to offset Cano, which, now, for all we know could be another $20 million Dipoto can spend going forward.
Encarnacion should bring a #5 spaghetti at the wall type of starter or so.
Gordon, Leake and Seager we would just be fortunate to shed their contracts like Cano and Bruce.
Re: Bruce to Phillies
It was interesting to see how every move seems to be working out for Dipoto.
He put Bruce in nearly every day, boom, builds value despite OBP because OPS is what matters when you're a slugger
They had benched Beckham, he comes back with a hot bat. Now there's a guy that should have gained some trade value since he came on board.
Didn't Dipoto say just about that when he spun Marty Montgomery or whatever that bums name was for this slugging Vogelbach kid? That Monty had come in and built so much surplus value that they had to trade him. Well, you didnt pay much for Beckham and he's hitting like a star 2B, so do something about it besides bench him again..

Re: Bruce to Phillies
So what's Dipoto going to do with all the cash savings? Probably make another Albert Pujols type of signing. 10 years $300 million. What he should have done was take a better or more prospects and pay the remaining amount of Bruce's contract. You can't build a winner in a mid-sized market paying big-city market prices in order to compete with NY and Boston for free agents.
Re: Bruce to Phillies
In my opinion Dipoto got more than out of Bruce than anyone really expected.
Kelenic and Dunn are the prospects that taking on Bruce helped us get...
Now we get the salary relief it was never expected we would receive and some lower prospect. That's gravy buddy.
Servais sucks but Dipotos on fire the past year.

.250 avg with .800 OPS isn't hitting like a star, and you're forgetting that his D is abysmal. But you're right, his value is probably at high water right now.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 7:22 pmThey had benched Beckham, he comes back with a hot bat. Re: Bruce to Phillies
So he's cut salary and the team sucks. That's not very hard to do. Let's wait and see how the prospects turn out, and how he spends the newly available cash come 2021.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 8:21 pmIn my opinion Dipoto got more than out of Bruce than anyone really expected.

It's hitting like a star compared to Dee Gordon or Shed Long.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 8:21 pm.250 avg with .800 OPS isn't hitting like a star, and you're forgetting that his D is abysmal. It would rank just ahead of Jose Altuve, among guys like DJ Lemehieu and Johnathan Schoop.
And, it was closer to an. 850 OPS before they started jerking him around. Put him somewhere and let him play.
Re: Bruce to Phillies
He has work to do. The foundation he is laying is solid though. Vogey, Beckham, Narvaez, all guys you could start building around. I would go at Beckham with a decent contract to be my 2B for the next few years.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 8:24 pmSo he's cut salary and the team sucks. That's not very hard to do. Especially over a guy like Gordon or Long.
I'd rather have Beckham at 2B than Gordon or Jean Segura, for example.
In my opinion people are far undervaluing Tim Beckham. He's earning a similar contract to what Segura got, imo. I hope they trade Gordon and give Beckham the position.
He's better than Gordon or Seager.

Minor League INF 3B Jake Scheiner will be the player coming to Seattle for Jay Bruce. Scheiner will be reporting to Single-A Modesto.
Some people inside the organization were high on Jake Scheiner. College pick, turns 24 in August. He's played a bunch of positions and has a shot to be a big league utility man. Per: Matt Gelb
