All Stars

Post by Oso Dorado » Fri Jun 28, 2019 3:34 pm

The All Star selections are in, and no Mariners are all star starters. This is as it should be, but it brings up the question of whom is going to rep the Mariners in the mid summer classic. No one leaps out to me as a our shining knight, so I'm going with Omar Navarez as the guy.
Anyone have a better choice?

Toss up with Vogelbach and Narvaez, honourable mention Crawford.

Crawford missed too much time to be a consideration imo. I say vogelbach.

There are only three choices,
Santana, Vogelbach and Narvaez.

Among Outfielders, Santana is 12th in Avg. 10th in OPS and 5th in HR
Among DHs, Vogelbach is 9th in Avg, 2nd in OPS and 4th in HR
Among Catchers, Narvaez is 2nd in Avg, 6th in OPS and 5th in HR
If you divide Santana's numbers by 3 since their are 3 times as any outfielders that would put him at 4th in Avg. 3rd in OPS and 2nd in HR.

I say that Santana gets the nod. Hitting .280 with 17 HR is going to stack up better against his competition than Vogeys low batting average and Narvaez low home run total will at their respective positions.

And yet Crawford is a shade behind Narvaez in WAR and ahead of Santana. Vogelbach streaks ahead of all of them in WAR so yeah Vogelbach.

Despite being severely punished for being a DH and 1B Vogey is leads OMAR 2.1 WAR to 1.5 WAR. He is also more of what you want to see in an AS game in terms of intangibles. He should and will be the AS rep.

Almost Vogey is the #1 DH. There are four more valuable catchers than Omar.

I doubt those making the selections are even going to look at WAR. i just don't see Vogelbach making it unless they take 4 DH's. Somehow Pence got voted in as the starter. Austin Meadows is hitting .300 and his OPS is higher than Vogey. Encarnacion is leading the League in Homeruns and then there is JD Martinez with the name recognition and his manager in charge of the team. I guess maybe they could sneak him in as a 1B ( He has only played 24 games there) but I think its a long shot.

There has to be one from ever team right? So Vogelbach seems the shoe in.
