I'm getting my Mariner gear together for the 54% celebration even though it's likely we don't make the Playoffs! If we do, we'll lose in the first round anyway. Makes no difference. The owners will make money.
We have a 93% chance of making the playoffs and a 54% chance of winning in the first round.

As irritating and under-achieving Dipoto's 54% thing is, it does seem to be exactly what you need to make the playoffs (as a wildcard). I guess the best he's willing to try for is squeaking in and hoping the team just magically catches fire against better teams.

This is horrible year for the AL. We won 54% or higher nine times since 2001 and missed the playoffs EIGHT times.

Interleague had less impact back then. What was more impactful was less post season spots available. I think with today's format the Ms would've gone to the post season a lot during that timespan. The Ms are the dictionary definition of Wild Card #3.

well the Padres do have a pretty good team, that's the best record any opposing team has against them, toronto is 3-0. The Padres have killed the Giants, 10-3, that's what they have built their record on this season

they also have the worst luck in baseball in terms of missing the playoffs relative to their record

I think it has a lot less to do with the Padres roster and a lot more to do with the Pearl Jam catalog of albums and songs. When you win the Vedder Cup, it puts wind in your sails.

If they didn't aspire to 54% they would need good luck. It is like the recent college grad applying for job at one company after he graduates and then being surprised he missed out being employed by just one hiring decision.

that's going back to 2002, the article actually didn't include the dipoto seasons, they had the worst luck relative to their annual records for making the playoffs in MLB. I am guessing Dipoto hasn't changed it
