By all accounts the two were extremely close, there was a lot more to it than translating. At one point ohtani joked to reporters they were more than friends, they were business partners.

I could see it either way, his having access to the account or ohtani covering the debt. I think it's the latter. Stealing the money doesn't really make sense. He had already created the debt, he didn't steal to gamble. I think ohtani covered it. How else would his name come up in the investigation. That was the story until it became messy for ohtani to be connected. Everything was fine until the press got hold of it. And it wasn't about theft, it was gambling
