Jerry just did the best he could with the hand he was dealt.
Ownership didn't make him Give Evan White a Guarenteed Major League Contract before he was even out of AA
Ownership didn't make him Give a long term deal to Marco Gonzalez.
Ownership didn't make him trade for Adam Frazier and Jessee Winker.
Ownership didn't make him give Julio a lifetime contract after 3 Months of good baseball.
Ownership didn't make him Sign Robby Ray and trade him for Mitch Hanniger.
Ownership didn't make him spend 108 Million on Castillo who is essentially your 5th best starter at this point.
Ownership didn't make him trade for Teoscar Hernadez.
Ownership didn't make him spend 24 Million on Garver.
Ownership didn't make him trade Eugenio Suarez and replace him with Luis Urias
Ownership didn't make him trade for Polanco
He has not used his resources wisely at all. They have four top of the rotation starters that are making a combined 6.3 Million They have a top 10 Bullpen that make a combined 8.4 Million. There opening day payroll was 139 Million which leaves 124 Million for the the offense and 5th starter. Any competent gm could put together a league average offense and find a serviceable 5th starter for 124 Million. Dipoto is not a competent gm.

$80M for negative WAR the past two offseasons will send that cost per War over $40M. lolbpj wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 10:55 pmI agree Captain.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 10:11 pmOwnership could have given him more but in no way shape or form has he done the best with the money he has.

Dipoto has wasted so much money since 2016 on useless players that it can't be blamed on ownership imo.
Even if they decided to give him less rope the last year or two.
I had a post about this before, from 2016-2022, not including the shortened covid season, Dipoto spent $175.2M on bad players, and unfortunately he has continued that trend in 2023 and 2024.
For whatever reason he can't judge talent that will succeed in Seattle when he's actually spending for it (he has success through the farm system and some waiver wire type moves).
Not to mention I think ownership had made more resources available for Dipoto- it was said many times- but he thought he could outsmart the "spend money" crowd.

I agree with everything DT said, but there's this as well....
The players hate Dipoto, and for good reason. Have you ever worked for a manager you hated? If so, did you give him your best efforts day in and day out? Did you have a good attitude and want to give 110% to make that manager you couldn't stand look good?

Re: Another writer calling for Jerry's head
And the best he could is not good enough. We've had a bottom of the league offense for two years running, even with a very cheap and cost controlled pitching staff. That falls directly on Dipoto.Pharmabro wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 9:11 pmExcept the ownership group were the ones that said, "oops that money we promised for years isn't actually there."TraderGary wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 7:18 pmIt's building. Jerry just did the best he could with the hand he was delt.
We lead the league in strikeouts in 2023, and the moves he made in the offseason were designed specifically to remedy that. And guess what? We lead the league in strikeouts again in 2024! He failed miserably at the number one goal he set out to do.
One playoff appearance in 9 years! He's had more than enough time to put a decent product on the field, even with the payroll restraints.
Next year, we're going to need a 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman, (we should need a new SS but they love JP for whatever strange reason), probably a LF, and a DH. The only position players that are set for 2025 are Julio, Cal, possibly Raley at 1st in a platoon situation with whoever, and Robles. That's 5 holes that will need to be filled. And they're stuck with bloated contracts for Garver, Haniger, JP, and you could even make an argument for Julio. Where's the money going to come from to fill all those holes?
This team and this roster is a fucking disaster, and who put together this dysfunctional roster? If Dipoto was a corporate CEO, that company would be in bankruptcy.
And the icing on the cake is, he's the slimiest POS in baseball. He should be selling used cars.

Polanco, and Ray. I remember a majority of us (vastly so) counted them as good moves.
I can't stand people who look at moves at the time and go "We signed the reigning CY"! Fk, yes! And then a ho-hum 1st year followed by a injury and "The Great Leader~Cap" comes on-line and makes his little gay list and proclaims he is better and smarter and all the trades he would have made would have worked out! I would have signed only guys that would have thrived. "I Cap would have graped Billy B into trading his top 10 hitter to his division rival"! You bet ya. "I am Captain I know who fails and thrives and develops ahead of time I have a set of crystal balls between my legs that I rub and they give me insights into all future events" "I am the Alpha and the Omega, I am Cap, hear me roar."
Cut the Cap!
Raley: His best addition and they don't even let him hit vs. lefties had a cold second half last season.
Polanco: Injury prone and erratic
Garver: If you squint you can kind of understand Garver given his OPS in 2023. But so many red flags
1. Always Hurt
2. Getting long in the tooth
3. Hit in an amazing lineup
4. 0-32 at T Mobile (now 20-173, .118 BA)
Haniger: Expecting him to be a key contributor was asinine.
Vargas/Seby: Good God, Helen Keller could see that shit show coming. Worst pitcher in AAA last season and a dogshit negative WAR BU catcher for a league average 3B
Urias: Negative WAR clown that was ok two years ago
Epic Fail.....again.

He didn’t build a dumb stadium that kills hitters.
None of these geniuses that think they are smart calling out every failed player as a dumb decision and thought they would made the right choice is dumb.
I recall you and Anthony being pumped up on Ray the reigning CY signing. But now two year later I look at some Monday Morning QB callling it out as dumb. I remember my thoughts were basically ha had a couple of CY type years a good TOR type and then some not so good years. When I look back at so many of these moves I remember supporting 2B Wong I was like He has been a 105-110 guy the last few years. Contract year maybe he has another “Up” year. I was fairly high on Saurez having a rebound and I was high on the 140’s OPS+ Winker had coming in. Garver is a guy I thought we might try to get from Minny. I had no expectations for Mike Ford. I thought about the prospect status of Robles but thought of it as a lotto ticket. I was up on Teo and he did have a 107 OPS+ which was disappointing but he still but up 20+ with 93 RBI.
The problem was never Scott, DeHart, JD. The fault is listening to 20+ years of hitters telling you how much they hate hitting at Safe KO’d shitters park. Remember how Beltre put up over 9 WAR 163 OPS+ with (48 bombs League #1)the year before and then ages 26-30 with us he maxed out at a 112 OPS+ with us and then put up a 141 OPS+ at age 31 in Boston and was #1 with 49 doubles 7.8 WAR
In both years he was a top 10 MVP vote guy and in none of his Seattle years was awarded with a MVP vote at all. Beltre was a 93 WAR guy who was a 1st ballot HOFer. Yet, he got Safe KO’d
I was pretty impressed that they got him but why has it taken over 20 years of BS and that organization has done nothing to fix the main reason the M’s are a f-ing laughing stock.
That is what these brave lil boy wonder writers need to be smashing into the faces of Mariner organizational types.

Re: Another writer calling for Jerry's head
The park certainly plays a role, no doubt. They need to take a very serious look at that in the offseason. But that doesn't absolve Jerry of his failures. Why hasn't he built a team that plays well at T-Mobile? Why is he constantly bringing in HR type hitters and stressing launch angle, even to stiffs like JP?Pharmabro wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 2:00 amD-train wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 1:35 amI can't stand people that make excuses for a guy that makes MILLIONS to build a winning roster and has completely failed time and time again.
