It needs to be .800 in a CORNER. Period. Unless you're a Rickey/Ichiro level OPS with the speed.

Guys like Dyson, Aoki, Mallex, they'll never be COF because they'll never have a high enough OBP to make up for their lack of SLG.

OBP will never replace SLG in a corner because they'll never have a high enough OBP to get to an .800 OPS.

35 of 50 RF with over 200 PA have an OPS of at least .775. That's the absolute low bar for a decent teams right fielder.

32 of 49 LF ....

Domingo Santana being #31. Hes WORSE than we should get from a COF. And guys like Mallex Smith couldn't hold his jock strap.

No, the OPS gap is too significant for a speedster to survive in a corner.
NOBODY wants Mallex in a corner, so Im not sure who you are arguing with. The question is, what does he need to do to be valuable enough to be a CF? I don't even want him the in the future.

So stop answering how his OBP makes him acceptable.

It doesnt. Even in CF.

Oh, yeah, unless he hits .320 and draws walks.

Yeah, THEN he would be fine. But then he would be a different player and we wouldnt have to talk about him anyways.

So just stfu if you dont want to hear the facts in response to your stupidity.

FUCKING READ. I never said his OBP makes him acceptable, I said a better OBP would make him acceptable.

If he hit .290 this year, his OPS would be around .770, would that be acceptable for a CF that has 40+ stolen bases a year? Or are you too dumb to figure out the math that the higher OBP would increase the OPS. The P is for plus. I know, addition may be too difficult for your tiny head to comprehend. The higher average would increase his slugging and average by at least 60 points each (with no additional walks, and all singles, and his OPS would be at .770. He has 31 SB now, if he was on base more.

He doesn't need to have an .800 OPS to play CF if he has good defense, he doesn't need to hit 25 HR a year. Its your own fucking argument. But he doesn't. He hasn't been that good, and his defense has been below average.

My whole argument in the first place is that OPS doesn't factor in speed, and the advantage you get from SB. A simple walk from a guy who can steal bases and he's on 2B. Much more valuable than a walk from Vogelbach.

And I stopped reading when you said "If"

IF Mallex Smith hit .400 he can play 1B.

He doesn't. And because hes not playing on turf anymore, he never will.

This is what he is.

Is that your problem, you stop reading so you never know what the other person is actually saying?

Whatever. Lets stop talking about him. Please. I think everybody agrees he sucks. Right now we have him, Lopes and Moore in the OF, so its not like there are better alternatives. Hopefully in the next few weeks we have LF Fraley, CF Haniger, RF Santana, and maybe Shed Long can play 2B over Dee Gordon. I think that would make us all happier.

How about one of you guys start a thread specific to what you are arguing about rather than using this one. I guess bpj ought to since he was the one who revived this thread after 74 days of nobody posting on it.

Why OPS isn't fair to guys who can steal bags. In my humble opinion...

Mallex has effectively 2 lead off doubles.

Edit: now triple.

Double edit: now homerun LOL
Flawed logic like this is why they don't get it.

A triple drives in every runner ahead of you. A 1B and two SB not only doesn't score those runs- because it assumes nobody is on base ahead of you- but it still relies on players behind you to perform.

Do you know what happens to probabilities when you start having to count on the next guy to perform?

Do the math using OBP.

.360 is your OBP. Now factor in the chance that the guy behind you performs.

.360x.360 = .1296% chance of both reaching base.

And if that guy draws a walk and you need to rely on the guy behind him?

.360x.360x.360= .046656

Every player you can rely on to score a run THIS at bat is the most important because the chances of two good outcomes is much less likely than one.

Which is why getting on base is not as important as how you do it.

A BB does not equal a single because a single can score guys from 2B and 3B, etc.
