I don't think it's the case that the players don't care. This is still largely the same team that went to the postseason last year. The major difference is that Cal can't get started and nobody can fix him.
Everyone knew Cal would regress, and the veterans they lost were replaced by rookies. Emerson got paid before he ever shown he could play above the Minors, and even though Cole has been pretty darn good, I am not sure guys like him and Canzone were meant to be the offensive leaders of this team. Randy pulls his weight, but no one else does. Sorry, Julio couldn't lead a group of kindergarteners through recess, no one gives a shit what Cal says anymore because he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat, same with JP. You're telling me that you watch this group and you see a bunch of guys grinding it out, or a bunch of guys cashing checks? The face of the franchise plays grab ass after losses. The SS is a kid that can't hit and has already been paid. That reminds you of last year's team?

You watched Geno and Polanco play the game last year and got the same vibe you get from this group this year? Again, I haven't watched in a long time, and one of the reasons I don't is what I just mentioned. They flat out look like a group of dudes playing Church League. It's gross.
Cal's season isn't just regression though. Regression would be somewhere in the range of his 2022, 2023, or 2024 seasons. The numbers indicate something is seriously wrong.
He's on pace for the worst one-season 180 in MLB history for a position player over two reasonably full seasons. I would call Chris Davis' 2013/2014 the worst https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... ch02.shtml as far as going from a top player to dogshit. Bryce Harper from 2015/2016 actually holds the position player record for the biggest WAR dropoff from one full season to the next https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... br03.shtml but at least he wasn't a total train wreck and managed to be about an average player in the second season.

Next year could be a rookie extravaganza with Felnin Celesten, Michael Arroyo, Lazaro Montes, Kade Anderson, and Ryan Sloan all on the roster.
So in other words? Another re-build. Jerry was hired in 2015 to re-build. So, the reward for our amazing Farm system in that decade plus will be two trips to the playoffs, one trip to the ALCS, and another re-build. So awesome. I guess I'll spend next summer not watching baseball as well.

I'd trade Kirby for Fernando Tatis Jr...

He's owed a lot of money until he's 35 years old... but in a few years what he's making could be pennies compared to the rest of the stars in the league. His star has faded a bit, but he's been one of the better players in baseball the last 2 months.... 7th in baseball at 1.9 fWAR.

He's basically getting paid the same as Luis Castillo is making through 2028 until it jumps to $35M a year.

I think when the Padres move him it will be for a prospect package. Two years of Kirby isn't really what they need. Of course, the new ownership may have their own ideas.

If Hancock and/or Kirby are on the block, who should you go after?

I mean... none of the turds half the people are proposing.

Schmitt, Shaw, Ward... can kick rocks for either of those guys.

If you're moving Kirby or Hancock it better be for the same impact back.

They have 1 starting pitcher under contract heading into next season in Michael King and he can opt out.

They got an ass ton of $$ tied up in their lineup and need to add SP's to take advantage of contending.

They have a bottom 5 farm where their closest arm is a tier-5 prospect in AA.

They are going to have to trade from their MLB roster to add pitching. This year has been evident that their strategy of signing a bunch of 1-year bounce back starters in free agency won't work. They'd be dumb as hell to do that again.

Considering that they likely hope to contend, Kirby could be exactly what they're looking for.

Give me Tatis Jr. and Jason Adam for Kirby and Luke Raley.

Kirby's a mid-rotation guy with 2 years left, and Hancock's probably a level below that, but with four years of control. Hancock's a lot cheaper than Kirby as well. It seems like these guys should have a lot of value around the league, but if you're looking at other teams' surplus it's hard to see value coming back in major league players.

A guy I've been wondering about is Jordan Lawlar of the Diamondbacks. He's a right-handed batter that can play the infield and the outfield and he seems to be sort of the extra guy on that roster. The problem is that he's always injured.

"Kirby is a mid rotation guy."

Since 2022, Kirby is 10th among pitchers in fWAR, 23rd in ERA, 10th in FIP, 14th in innings pitched. There are 30 teams in the league... meaning he'd be a team's ace on half of them.

He has a career ERA of 3.58 and will eclipse 190 innings pitched for the third time in four years since his rookie season where he was called up 2 months into the year.

He is on a Hall of Fame trajectory.

He is about as far away from a "mid rotation guy" as possible and I sincerely hate when people say that.

One of these pitchers... people think is the next coming of Jesus and is worth a King's ransom in a trade. I'll give you a hint... it's not the first guy and who fkn knows why.
