It's part of a bigger conversation, but it doesnt happen at the same time as the OPS discussion.

The discussion on Mallex would stop with OPS though, that's what bugs them. We wouldn't need to factor in SB because OPS already tells us what we need to know. He doesnt deserve to be here.

Let me give an example of where speed isn't factored in, but can help you score. A few games ago, Mallex Smith drew a leadoff walk. Crawford then grounded out to 2B. A slow runner on 1B is likely a double play, or at least a forceout at 2B. Then Santana hit a sharp single to LF. Mallex Smith was able to score just ahead of the throw. 80 % of players probably don't score from 2B on that single. That is how simply getting on base can help you. Problem is, Dee Gordon and Mallex Smith don't do it enough. Smith because he doesn't hit well enough, Gordon because he can't take a walk.

And no matter how you slice your example hes still a .650 OPS whose ideal role is a pinch runner.

I get that his speed can score a run. It's just that it doesnt come close to making up for the void that his lack of offense creates the rest of the time.

The .150 OPS delta between Mallex and any other .800 ops player creates more runs than Mallex's 40- mostly useless- stolen bases.

Add the .150 OPS over a season, it will create way more runs than the stolen bases, i.e. Santana vs. Smith.

And don't forget on top of that that Santana was near the bottom of corner outfielders.
