It does more than it leads to losing.HawkandMariner88 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 06, 2025 5:00 amSpending doesn't equate to wins. I get we all want Jerry to open up the purse strings but that doesn't guarantee anything. I just want a competitive group of guys willing to go out there every night for 6 months & give it their all. No team is going undefeated but the fact that their trying to win ballgames is what matters most. Yankees have Judge, they may not even make the playoffs at this point. Can you imagine an October without the league MVP.
Nobody will argue that Jerry has built a strong core of players and a strong farm system to back it up.
Nobody can argue that having Naylor at 1B and Geno at 3B to start the season probably would have led to more wins. It wouldn't have cost them much more to get that done either... or something similar.
Operating with extreme caution with $$ I would argue has been the difference between the M's making the playoffs for 3 consecutive season rather than ending multiple years a couple games back and singing the shoulda, coulda, wouldas.
Hopefully the M's do something this year. Even if they don't, they still don't have a 1B or a 3B again heading into next season. And since the trade market has been so bad in the offseason in recent years, that only leaves one option. And I really hope that option is paying for a good 1B and 3B rather than signing dogshit talent like Donovan Solano and Rowdy Tellez.

Check out Giants top prospect Bryce Eldridge. 20 years old & already raking in AAA. Giants got their infield locked up for the short term so Seattle may wanna jump on that.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Wed Aug 06, 2025 5:23 amIt does more than it leads to losing.HawkandMariner88 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 06, 2025 5:00 amSpending doesn't equate to wins. Again, you're overestimating the gap between current and max revenue.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sat Aug 02, 2025 2:30 amWhere they really stand (and have stood) to increase revenue is in the streaming/cable markets. The people that attend the games are mainly there for the stadium "experience" and care less about the outcome of the game than the fans that stay home or live too far to go. I think the number of people that either watched on cable (hence driving up the ratings and advertizing revenue) or now pay for streaming is more given to fluctuations in accord with how well the team is performing.
The TV contracts are negotiated. The advertisers pay the TV networks, not the team. It's all mapped out, and everyone is trying to maximize their profits. Winning isn't all that important. They've got the 1995 highlights, they can always run those.
But, my main point is really that winning in MLB is not a matter of outspending your opponents. You can only buy veteran players. New players are under club control for 6 years, and with just a small extension you're looking at 8-9 years under club control. If the guy comes up when he's 24, then you can keep him until he's 33 without spending much money. History is full of high-payroll teams that didn't win it all.
The big problem with the Mariners is they never adopted a blow it up and rebuild strategy until Jerry came on board. Then, Jerry missed on some picks like Kelenic and some trades like Marte. But, now the team is good. I guess we'll see how good. I think maybe very, very good.

Kelenic was acquired in the Cano trade, and if you're talking about Ketel Marte, he hit 3 home runs in 713 plate appearances in a Mariner uniform before he was traded away. If Noelvi Marte, we've gotten the better of that trade so far.DanielVogelbach wrote: ↑Wed Aug 06, 2025 2:41 pmThe big problem with the Mariners is they never adopted a blow it up and rebuild strategy until Jerry came on board. Good call. Also the Cano and Diaz package deal was a solid salary dump.DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 06, 2025 7:44 pmKelenic was acquired in the Cano trade, and if you're talking about Ketel Marte, he hit 3 home runs in 713 plate appearances in a Mariner uniform before he was traded away. You can't fault dipoto for trading for JK, he was a solid prospect at the time. I'd like to see where anyone had that flop predicted. It's really a cautionary tale for the unpredictable quality of baseball, him and Ackley. Nobody what ifs it either, if kelenic had lived up to the hype
