I agree there is a soft limit somewhere around 110 - 125 mil. Playing with that limitation changes everything. If your going to still try to build a competitive WS team then you have to focus on pitching. You can have a mediocre positional team as long as your pitching is lights out. The Rays are a team to model. They rely on their young pitching staff. Most team are to impatient and throw them to the wolves. Pitchers normally take a while to become consistently good. Age 26. -27. We need to keep our young pitching longer so they mature. Our minors need to mature a little longer to consistently feed our major team. We are getting close though. Another year and our pitchers will be ready to contribute. If we trade them to early this won’t work,

Many ways to attack this. Atlanta was somewhere in between. What ever we do it can’t be like the angels. Heavy on positional and weak on pitching. Lights out bull pen and growing rotation is my ideal way. You still have to average near 250 and have a positive Run differential. Still a lot of work to do.

Good luck JD

Reds blogger
I’m losing ways to describe just how unfathomably cheap the Cincinnati Reds are, have been, and continue to be.

Just days after forfeiting the chance to shop Tucker Barnhart for anything of note, they’ve lost Wade Miley for absolutely nothing, too. The team announced on Friday afternoon that Miley had been claimed by the Chicago Cubs, but I’ll go ahead and link to the Cubs tweet because I’m about to do my best to forget the Reds exist on all platforms.

In effect, the Reds had chosen not to pick up Miley’s $10 million option for next year despite the fact that he pitched well enough in 2021 to likely pick up some down-ballot Cy Young Award votes. That meant they’d be on the hook for his $1 million buyout, so instead of doing that they exposed him to waivers in hopes someone who was willing to pay him the $10 million to pitch next year would claim him, and they’d be on the hook for nothing.

The Cubs claimed him. They’ll pay a good baseball player to play baseball, just like the Tigers were willing to pay Tucker Barnhart.

This franchise is embarrassing, and there are few other words to use to describe it.
Good, I'll take 2x seasons of Jesse Winker if they wanna get rid of him for scraps.

Hell, Winker would be a fantastic trade target IMO. .922 road OPS, very different from Castellanos.

Even the 'cheap' reds are at an estimated $131 million this year. The M's should go over that, imo. I'll take Winkler and Castillo or Mahle.

Seems JD is the only guy on Earth that doesn't think we need an Ace. Or maybe he does and is keeping it a secret.

I still haven't seen where Dipoto said we don't need one, what did I miss?

He has specifically talked about improving the lineup. Even mentioned names. No real mention of the rotation especially an Ace or even TOR.
“One of the things that’s important to us is finding a player who is adaptable and willing to move around the field and maybe get a little uncomfortable,” Dipoto said.

That’s where it gets interesting, because Dipoto then specifically mentioned two players.

“And there’s some of those guys that already have done that in their career,” he continued. “Guys like Semien and Báez have done that, and that kind of selflessness is a big deal for us.”
