You don't draft college position players with these offensive numbers this high. Maybe you take a flyer on a guy in the fifth round or something.MarinerFan4Life wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 12:54 am
I know, doesn't really seem to make much sense unless you are hedging against trading Harry Ford.....

Re: 2025 MLB DRAFT THREAD
and like i pointed out, the way you evaluate and value catchers is in for a big change soon, seems a little risky to be investing in one with a high pick now, strikes me as something Z would do. I do have confidence in dipoto to draftGL_Storm wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 1:58 amNo, you don't need an offensive catcher in the minors before you can trade Harry Ford. That doesn't even make sense.
The problem with Stevenson is that his numbers aren't that great and he just doesn't project as much of a prospect. They even said on the broadcast that there are concerns about swing and miss in the zone, which is not what you want to hear.
I'm extremely disappointed in this pick.
Re: 2025 MLB DRAFT THREAD
Cal was drafted in 2018. Here are the first 14 rounds of that year.
Where are they now?
fwiw, #2 pick (ahead of Cal, I might add), is 28 and is still playing.....in a Mexican independent league. After the M's, he's toiled in the minors for the Yankees, Rangers and Dodgers, never rising above AA ball.
Anybody here excited when he was drafted? I had hopes...

Re: 2025 MLB DRAFT THREAD
I think you can kinda see it, this wasn't considered a strong draft at the top, Bremner probably doesn't really score that much lower than Anderson, he's seen as pretty much a sure thing, and they save slot money, i think slot had a lot to do with it. You invest more heavily in the lower part of the draft as opposed to the top. Probably have to judge their entire draft

My non top of the draft hopeful was Stubbs in the 11th Rd.rockycola wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 3:30 amCal was drafted in 2018. Here are the first 14 rounds of that year.

I am geeked with #3 in the 1st. I am OK with the next 2 picks. But the 3rd Rd. pick pisses me off. He is a 40- point prospect overall and you had a lot of 50 pointers and even 45 overall. 50-point prospects can be top 100 or near top 100's.
The M's #9 PROSPECT a 2nd Rd. pick from last year is worth 14.2 M Ryan Sloan and is a 50 grade prospects.
#10 is Locklear who was a top 100 but fell out.
#11 Tai Pete is the highest rated 45 overall. Followed by Bautista, and finally on to Josh Caron at #19
With this raft you are adding 1 to the top 5. 2 more to the top 13. And that 3rd round pick you could have seen another top=100 grade prospect added. Confusing?

Re: 2025 MLB DRAFT THREAD
He obviously has good power, but had a .251 BA vs. college pitching. That is horrendous for a 2nd round pick. Even for a catcher. For reference, Zunino hit .348 and Cal hit .326 for Florida and Florida St. Z hit .199 career and Cal's BA hasn't been good until this season. This guy will NEVER hit MLB pitching and probably won't hit minor league pitching.Bil522 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 1:46 amIt makes total sense if you are planning on trading Harry Ford, in which case you would need an offensive catcher in the minors after we do not resign Garver next year.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 1:08 amIt still doesn't make sense.
