That "cheapest organization" has gone to an arbitration hearing with only one player since Jerry Dipoto joined the club in September 2015.

Apparently the Seattle front office is not handing Teoscar Hernandez a blank check at this early stage.
A blank check lol?

He can’t be asking for more than $15 million. It’s embarrassing that they can’t fork up $300 to $700k more for a player they’re supposedly trying to convince to stay.
MLB Trade Rumors projected Teoscar Hernandez with a 2023 arbitration salary of $14.1 million:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/ ... -2023.html

The Seattle Mariners reportedly topped the projection by submitting an arbitration figure of $14.3 million while the Hernandez submission apparently has not been made public:

Where is the $14.6 million figure found?

Spotrac estimates $14,463,983 and MLB Trade Rumors projects $14.1 million.

Excuse me, I forgot a 4.

The point being that they likely aren't far apart on a figure. And the fact that the M's FO is stingy on a few hundred K is just so typical. If Teoscar is asking for $15 million, give him the f'ing money and move on.

Instead, it's going to a hearing... which is just fantastic optics for the prospects of extending him if they won't open up the pocket books for might as well be $10 to a regular human.

What are the chances that Teoscar Hernandez and the Mariners go to a contested arbitration hearing?

The Spotrac estimate is closer to the reported Mariner submission than it is to the fabricated $14.6 million figure (and the Mariner submission exceeds the MLB Trade Rumors projection).

The Teoscar Hernandez camp might be encouraged that the Mariner submission roughly splits the difference of the Spotrac and MLBTR projections. The matter will likely settle if Hernandez risks losing a contested arbitration hearing by submitting a significantly higher figure.

By Ryan Divish
Seattle Times staff reporter
With Friday’s deadline for Major League Baseball teams to exchange salary figures with the arbitration-eligible players on their respective rosters, the Mariners reached salary agreements with three of their six eligible players.

Reaching agreements were:

Ty France, first baseman.
Tom Murphy, catcher.
Paul Sewald, right-handed pitcher.
Per multiple reports, France, who posted a .274/.338/.436 slash line this past season while making the American League All-Star team, is in his first year of salary arbitration and agreed to a $4.1 million contract.

Sewald, who is in his second year of arb eligibility, also agreed to a $4.1 million contract. He was 5-4 with a 2.67 ERA with 20 saves in 2021.

Murphy, who missed most of last season with shoulder surgery, agreed to a $1.625 million contract.

The Mariners failed to reach agreements with three players — outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, right-handed pitcher Diego Castillo and utility player Dylan Moore.

While the Mariners have only gone to an arbitration hearing with one player — Tom Wilhelmsen in 2015 — with Jerry Dipoto as the team’s top executive, there is a chance that they could do that with any of these three players.

Hernandez, who was acquired in this offseason in a trade from the Blue Jays, is in his third year of arbitration and is eligible for a significant salary. MLB Trade Rumors algorithm projects him at a $14.1 million salary.

Castillo, an enigmatic reliever who can be dominant and detrimental, is projected to make $2.9 million.

Moore, who underwent sports hernia surgery this offseason, is projected to make $2 million.

M’s and Teoscar heading to an arb hearing… has to be over a few hundred thousand…

Fucking Christ cheapest organization that pretends they’re a contender.
Agreed. That is so ridiculous. Teo is gonna earn what? $14.5 million!??!
He replaced Hanniger who will make $43.5 million over then next 3 years...an average of you guessed it....$14.5 million.

ludicrou speed.gif
Teo for one year $14M is massively better than Mitch on a 3 year deal but when you consider we lost 3 years of Swanson, it is about even.

According to columnist Mark Feinsand at MLB.com, Teoscar Hernandez filed an arbitration figure of $16 million and the Mariners submitted an arbitration figure of $14 million:

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-arbitratio ... 3704563169

MLB Trade Rumors had projected Hernandez with a 2023 arbitration salary of $14.1 million and Spotrac estimated his 2023 salary at $14,463,983.

It's a cheap shot to call the Seattle front office "cheap" on the basis of Friday's reported exchange of arbitration figures.

Friday was the deadline for parties to submit figures. Their submissions may be a formality if the parties are working on a long-term extension as rumored last week:

I agree $16M is too much for him to expect. No way we extend him. He will want to test FA.
