Thats a close call. I would say that with similar offensive stats you would go with the 3rd baseman for position scarcity. However Rizzo has a much better recent history with the bat. over the last 4 seasons Rizzo's OPS+ is at 123 while Seager is at 101.harmony wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 3:52 pmWho is a better investment: an optioned Kyle Seager for one year at a net $18 million or free agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who reportedly turned down a five-year, $70 million contract extension last spring?
Since the start of the 2020 season Seager has posted 4.0 fWAR and an OPS+ of 105 in 918 plate appearances while Rizzo, who is 21 months younger than Seager, posted 2.6 fWAR and an OPS+ of 109 in 819 plate appearances.
Ultimately though I would like to make a bigger splash than Rizzo. Kris Bryant is a similar offensive player to Rizzo (122 OPS+ over the last 4 years) but does it as a third baseman which is more valuable. And I'll keep banging the Drum for Matt Olson and his 153 OPS+ to come via trade. Unlike Rizzo who will be 32 next year, Olson is 27 and just entering his prime. Thats the kind of piece that you need to pair up with J-ROD in the middle of the order and build a championship team around.
