2025 MLB DRAFT THREAD

I haven't had much of a chance to tune in today, but if my count is right:

3 Catchers
2 Outfielders
2 Shortstops
1 Third baseman
13 Pitchers
Total: 21 picks (w/the extra competitive balance pick)

Sure hope, if the catchers are all signed, at least one will transition to first base.

Pitchers: Isn't 13 an unlucky number? I don't know yet what the righty/lefty, nor the starter/reliever breakdown is which will be interesting.

Historically, 2 to 4 don't get signed each year.
Unscientifically, up to 15 each year never get a whiff of MLB time, much less ever get to even AAA.
Numerous draftees are with a new organization after a few years, too.

What with the success ratio, DavidGee24 is right; what's there to get excited about except for maybe the top 3 picks?

I don't mind at 2 of them THe NC guy looks pretty good and this guy:

Grant Jay C/OF, Dallas Baptist
He reminds me of Tyler O'Neal (tank) he is 6' 225#
picked in the 300s but he has a 170 for a ranking

He might have been like. It is the 12th Round and there is not big money to entice me out of the the school. But then The M's call him up in the 19th round and say hi we got 1.5 million reasons not to go to Tennessee because you are the only 10 I see.

Not to mention maybe it is Nick Becker who might have been like, No thanks to 2M+/- I want to play with my brother?

I was hoping they would draft Appenzeller with one of the early picks. That he made it to round 18 means that his number is too high. He probably wants $3 million or something like that.

Unless we sign them both it was not a good draft after #3 IMOP. My reasoning here is that you got your guy to drop 3/4 of a million below slot. If you take the MLB.com top 250 and divide it by 30 teams you get 8.33 top 250's per team. Seattle drafted 8 in the top 250. That is a bit below expectations but, they did draft 5 of the top 83. I have heard that this draft did not have clear super prospects like it did with ARod, Jr, Skenes, Haper, etc.

I heard a number of folks speculating on getting a guy to go below slot to get another really good prospect or 2 later on down the draft. We know they saved about 750K with Anderson
But their next pick was @35 2.76M College player. If they called him up and said 2.5M You think any normal person goes f you full value or nothing

Hugus 850K I could see them getting below slot here
Mason Peters 620K same.

I could see them being able to wrangle 1-2M to tempt the 19th rounder. If they sign them all, I am really happy with this draft.

I think we can get him because of this:
A team that outspends its pool by 0-5 percent pays a 75 percent tax on the overage. At higher thresholds, clubs lose future picks: a first-rounder and a 75 percent tax for surpassing their pool by more than 5 and up to 10 percent; a first- and a second-rounder and a 100 percent tax for more than 10 and up to 15 percent; and two first-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 15 percent.

In the 13 years with these rules 240 times MLB clubs have overspent their pools but never by more than 5%

Mariners: $17,074,400 Bonus pool (5%) = 853,720 I think we could go 2+ for both of them.
