Haniger has gotten several base hits on ground balls recently right at where the 2B plays without the shift and would have been routine GBs if the shift wasn't on so it work both ways.

In football if you are playing a running team with a weak passing game you stack the box and try to exploit their weakness. If you are playing a team like the Hawks last year who only know how to throw deep or sideways passes you take away the deep ball. Imagine a rule that the could only single cover DK and Tyler deep. You are punishing the defense because the offense refuses to adapt.
