To stand pat or not to stand pat, that is the Q

We are ranked at 5th most likely to land Soto.

Gonzales is the hardest one for me. His value is going to any rocket in 1-2 years.

And why would the Rangers move a cost-controlled Heim? To a divisioin rival no less? Do you have any idea what that would cost? lolSexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 9:01 am
I'd love to grab Jonah Heim as our counter-part to Cal. Great behind the dish, and can rake from the left side. Would be a lethal 1-2 behind the plate.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a Sean Murphy or Shea Langeliers.
Re: To stand pat or not to stand pat, that is the Q
Murphy yes but doubt the A's would trade Shea for the same reason you brought up about Heim.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 3:12 pmAnd why would the Rangers move a cost-controlled Heim? First, it does not matter what other teams do or have done. That is not of consequence here. The goal is to not only make the postseason in 2022, and ideally do it by winning the AL West which the M's are by no means out of, but to also make the postseason in 23, 24, 25, 26 you get the picture. Every damn season. This team is just entering its contending window NOW. And that window is a MASSIVE one. Think the roll-up door at Boeing plant.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 7:55 am
How many contending baseball teams stand pat and only replace their backup catcher at the deadline?
This just isn't realistic talk. It actually makes my head hurt.
Dipoto should be scouring the ends of the earth for significant upgrades or he's not doing his job. If there was ever a deadline to go for it, it's this one... and you hope they go w. Taylor Dollard or Emerson Hancock to supplant the pitching staff in a playoff run? Jesus.
Thus, Ms FO has to be very careful about the kind of prospect and ML roster talent it yields to make upgrades.
Lastly, how the hell do you scoff at adding Hancock or Dollard?! I'll wager either of those arms is better than anything we'll find on the market, Castillo included.
Re: To stand pat or not to stand pat, that is the Q
Also, I should note Seattle or Bust that the Mariners have already made a move to add to the roster. They added Carlos Santana. That counts. So they will not have stood pat for the entirety of the trade season.

I don't think it would cost near this much to acquire Castillo. BTV gets values wrong a lot and I think they're overvaluing rentals.
Like I mentioned, just a few years ago the Pirates traded Gerrit Cole for the no. 6, 8, 10 prospects in the Houston organization and that was for 2 full years of service time, not 1.5... if we were to honor BTV values, that would be the like the M's sending $15 million in prospects for Castillo who they say is worth $38 million. I just don't buy that he's worth that much... he should be had for much less value.
Castillo and Cole are also on very similar career paths where they had highs and lows in their first few years... I mean Cole finished 4th in the Cy Young in 2015... 2 years before he was traded. Yet he only netted that in return? AND for a full, extra first half of service time?

Because relying on rookie pitchers to carry you through a playoff run is insane and nobody does that. Especially a rookie in Hancock who has only pitched 41 innings this year and 85 innings in his pro career. There's simply 0 chance he'll be an M in the 2nd half of this season.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 3:22 pmFirst, it does not matter what other teams do or have done. Why on earth do you think the Astros went out and traded for Zach Grienke vs putting Corbin Martin (former top 100 prospect) into the rotation in 2019? Because they want veteran pitchers who have been there to carry the load... they actually traded Corbin Martin in the deal to get Grienke.

He isn't a rental. edit I see you know he would be 1.5 years. Rentals = expiring contracts hitting FA at the end of the season they are traded.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 4:03 pmI don't think it would cost near this much to acquire Castillo. True, but neither was Cole. He was arguably better than Castillo in the early part of his career and only netted a return of around $15ish million in prospects.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 4:33 pmHe isn't a rental. edit I see you know he would be 1.5 years. I think of 1.5 years as basically being a rental... $38 million in prospect capitol is like Noelvi Marte... there's no way in hell the Reds get a Noelvi Marte level return for 1.5 years of Castilllo.
