Julio is still developing as a hitter, but he's doing it at the major league level. To a certain extent you can say that about almost any player, but Julio is very clearly not a finished product at the plate. We can see this in his approach and his at bats, and of course, he's going against the best pitchers in the world that all have access to advanced analytics that tell them exactly how to pitch to his weaknesses, and he's playing half his games in the worst ballpark in the world for hitters, and he's on a team and in an organization that is profoundly confused about how to coach and develop hitters, and this is all happening in one of the worst league-wide seasons for offense ever.
Is this just who Julio is now?

Yeah that was his first horrid K of the season. It means he isn't going to listen to Edgar either.

As you said, he’s clearly had a bad season, and we just have to hope he figures it out. It’s probably not going to happen in just a week though…

So Edgar telling him to be patient and not swing at Garbage all weekend wasn't enough. He needs to hear it every day for a month and then he will finally decide to take the advice? The results might take time but he could change his approach tomorrow if he wanted to.

Miss Spell was my hot English teacher in HS so I always spell it that way in her honor!

I don’t know what he needs, and it probably isn’t going to make a huge difference this year. He’s clearly capable of playing better, and I hope he does.D-train wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2024 5:10 amSo Edgar telling him to be patient and not swing at Garbage all weekend wasn't enough. The Mariners being an elite team is contingent on Julio being a superstar IMO.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2024 4:11 amWhat does "superstar" have to do with anything? He's a player. They don't dip to .650 OPS's in their third year.
I don't ever see this lineup being good enough if he's even an .800 OPS hitter... bro needs to hit 40 bombs, drive in 120 and hit for a .900 OPS or it's just all for not.

The Mariners don't really develop hitters is the problem, though there are some signs of that changing in the minor leagues. But we'll see how that goes.
You know, with Julio, they had this sort of unique situation where this pretty strong talent sort of fell in their lap and did manage to develop, somehow, and they made what was probably the right decision to bring him to the majors after less than 1000 minor league plate appearances, and most of those at the lower levels. And despite the organization being absolute shit at developing hitters, and having to hit in the worst ballpark in the league, he still did pretty good. That's what talent is, I think. But sometimes when you have a lot of talent you don't learn to maximize it and I think that's where he is right now; he's at this sort of in-between stage.
To me, it's entirely obvious that he's simply never learned how to be a complete professional hitter. It's consistent with what I've seen from him since he arrived in the majors and it's consistent with what I know to be true of this organization. How many league average hitters have the Mariners developed in the 25 years since Safeco Field opened? Forget star players, how many regular solid major league average type hitters have come out of the Mariners system in the last 25 years and were able to succeed in the majors with the Mariners and with this ballpark as their home field? I think it might be just Seager, Julio, and Cal. Everyone else just gets crushed.
