Wow - early indication is 3rd biggest earthquake this century in CA.

• A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northern California, according to the US Geological Survey

• A tsunami warning was issued but has since been cancelled for the coasts of both northern California and southern Oregon

• Multiple aftershocks have been reported since the initial earthquake, which struck about 11:00 local time (19:00 GMT)

Didn't feel it here in the Bay Area. But 20 phones went off in my class in unison warning us of a tsunami.

Seattle's earthquake history includes:

Seattle Fault
The Seattle Fault is a zone of shallow thrust faults that runs through Seattle and the Puget Sound Lowland. The most recent earthquake on the Seattle Fault was about 1,100 years ago, and it was likely a magnitude 7.8 earthquake. The Seattle Fault has been active several times in the past 3,000 years.

1965 earthquake
A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Puget Sound region on April 29, 1965. The earthquake caused three deaths from falling debris and four deaths from heart failure.

2001 Nisqually earthquake
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Olympia, Washington on February 28, 2001. The earthquake caused $2 billion in damage.

Other earthquakes
Other earthquakes that have occurred in the Puget Sound region include:
-A magnitude 5.3 earthquake in 1996
-An earthquake in 1999 in Satsop
-An earthquake in 1962 in Clark County
-Earthquakes in 1909, 1939, 1946, and 1949

The Puget Sound region, which includes Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia, has a history of seismic activity. Deep quakes are the most common large earthquakes in the region.

The 1996 earthquake was the one that happened during a home Mariner's game that Dave (while on air) said, "I am out of here".

I was also present at the one in2001, but on the tarmac at SeaTac Airport. Since the tower windows shattered, they would not clear us for takeoff, so we sat there for 3 hours. When we got off the jet, my 4 year old stated, "Phoenix looks a lot like Seattle".

The most recent major earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone was on January 26, 1700, with an estimated magnitude of 9.0. This earthquake caused a tsunami that crashed into the land and dropped the coastline by several feet.
