Not only that they lied about using the savings to go all in once they were ready. Complete fucking lie. It's interesting to me to me to dig into the concept of rebuilding. Fans have been conditioned to accept seasons of slashed payrolls and losing for a blessing of wins in the future someday. I think a lot of it is pretty much a scam MLB has been able to sell fans to keep their payrolls down. The mariners used it effectively
