First Seattle pick of the day is in, Round 11. Could be an absolute steal. With the 336th pick of the draft the Mariners went with the 134th ranked player, Catcher Carter Bins.

Carter Bins | Rank: 134
School: Fresno State Year: Junior
Position: C Age: 21 DOB: 05/11/1998
Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6'0" Weight: 200 lb.
Previously drafted: 2016, 35th (1037) - PHI

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

A 35th-round pick out of a Northern California high school by the Phillies in 2016, Bins turned them down to attend Fresno State. He became an immediate starter behind the plate for the Bulldogs and has blossomed into one of the better defensive catchers in college baseball. A team that believes enough in his bat could take him in the top three rounds.

Bins has a chance to become a plus receiver with arm strength to match. He moves well behind the plate, possesses soft hands, blocks well and makes accurate throws. He also earns praise for his instincts and leadership skills.

Bins' bat will determine whether he can become a starting catcher at the big league level. He has shown better discipline and made more consistent contact this spring, but his right-handed swing can get long and he'll probably hit more for power than average. While he hasn't driven the ball as much in 2019 as he did a year ago, he has solid to plus raw power.

12th Round pick (#366)

Mistico, Antoine
Gateway CC (AZ)
CF
L/R
JC J2
--
6' 0 180lbs
DOB:06/30/98
GateWay Community College outfielder Antoine Mistico signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Illinois next season. Mistico will enroll at Illinois next year as a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Antoine has all the tools to be a productive player for us right away," said head coach Dan Hartleb. "I had a chance to see him in practice and he is a tremendous athlete. I'm excited to add another top player to our program."

Mistico was drafted in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers but elected to go to Scottsdale Community College (Arizona) his freshman year before playing at GateWay Community College (Arizona) this season. He hit .364 as a freshman and is hitting with .363 this season, while combining to go 52-56 in stolen bases over his first 101 games in the wood bat ACCAC junior college conference. He is currently ranked fourth in NJCAA Division II in steals (29-30).

"Antoine is an extremely athletic outfielder that can play all three outfield positions," said recruiting coordinator Adam Christ. "He has the speed to cause a lot of havoc on the bases, plus an advanced approach at the plate. Along with the speed, he has the ability to drive the ball in the gaps and out of the park. We look forward to adding Antoine to the great recruiting class for next year."

Mistico did not start playing baseball until his freshman year of high school. He hit .390 in his prep career and was a perfect 33-33 in stolen bases, tying the Chandler High record for steals.

"I choose Illinois because of the outstanding baseball program, coaches and the incredible community of alumni," said Mistico.

Once they get to the 20th round they could just randomly draw names from the US census for 18-22 yo just like the US Military used to do for their Draft and they would end up with guys just as likely to make the big leagues.

Good point, I'm just hoping some of the guys are high schoolers expected to go to college that are so excited to play for the Mariners that they decide to sign. Lol.

Decent listen for some insight to the M's approach to this year's draft:

Also, I'm not the biggest Jason Churchill fan but, he was on with Softy yesterday giving his 2 cents worth on the M's picks:

Mariners picking some pretty good names in this years draft

Levi Stoudt (only probably interesting to me, because it is 1 letter away from my nephews name.
Michael Limoncelli
Patrick Frick
Anthony Tomczak (another 'zak pitcher)
Dutch Landis
Tyler Driver (would be a better name if he was a hitter instead of a pitcher though)
Trent Tinglestad
Utah Jones (my personal favorite)
Cody Grosse

Which are your favorite names.

I think that qualifies for your "High risk- High reward" types you were banging the drum for. You sure you dont have a wire tapped into our War Room?
I was thinking the tools vs polish trade off, not medical risks, lol. Hopefully they are healthy.

they don't sound particularly high reward do they? I kept running across "high floor" when describing the first three picks
I guess the second two are value picks. They were selected a little further than they were earlier ranked.

I didn't know sexymarinerfan had a blog. lol
The Seattle Mariners continue to stay consistent with the plan to complete their rebuild within the next two to three years with the pick of George Kirby. The right-hander out of Elon was the best college arm left on the board at 20, so the Mariners went best available, and with Kirby's polish and skills, it was a great choice. In 2019, Rutledge posted an 8-2 record with a 2.75 ERA, but what truly popped is his whopping 107:6 K:BB ratio. His command is the best in the class, and with a fastball that can reach 98 mph, and an above average curveball and slider, he has a great chance at becoming a third starter in a rotation. Should he make it to the majors with the Mariners, he'll likely join a rotation made up of Yusei Kikuchi, Justin Dunn, Marco Gonzales, and Justus Sheffield. If the Mariners weren't a team to watch before, they certainly are now.
