Re: Spring Training story lines
MLB is a partner in producing the WBC, them and the players association. I don't think they are in the position to ban players from participating in it. I don't think teams can do it either for that reason.
Re: Spring Training story lines
I'm not sure I understand the rationale. It seems like it would be easier to dictate or determine who could play in an "in-house" event than some random tournament outside MLB's direct jurisdiction.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:21 pmMLB is a partner in producing the WBC, them and the players association. I get that MLB is trying to gin up interest and enthusiasm with the WBC, but surely they can't require teams to let player participate if the teams are worried about injuries to star players... I dunno.

Actually - I read a little more. Turns out, teams can "allow" players to play - or at least allow (or deny) their decision to play based on insurance.
Here's an article from the LA Times - there's a paywall, but if anyone is really interested I could likely post the full text.
https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/20 ... ll-classic
Here's the germane bits:
While Major League Baseball and the players’ association want the WBC to thrive, believing a star-studded tournament produces substantial long-term benefits for the sport, teams are understandably more concerned about the short term. There’s a 162-game season to play after the event. The tournament’s timing — the final will be played eight days before opening day — leaves clubs queasy.
Insurance softens the potential blow. Players are paid their guaranteed salaries no matter what, whether they miss the entire season or a few games because of an injury sustained in the WBC.
The insurance coverage — which has always gone through Team Scotti, a Pittsburgh-based broker recently bought by NFP — protects teams from having to pay a player for time missed because of an injury stemming from the tournament. If an injury is determined to have happened in the WBC, then the team is reimbursed for the time the player misses. WBC participants are required to undergo entrance and exit physicals to help glean injury information.
Basically, a competitive team that relies heavily on a superstar who has a history of injuries may not be insured if the play in the WBC and, as I understand it, if they got injured their team would not be required to pay their salary.

MLB network's Greg Amsinger. “A segment that I came up with that I wanted to bring to our national viewers (Tuesday) is which camp in Arizona did we love the most,” Amsinger said. “Dan Plesac and I got a chance to go to nine different camps, and which camp do we love the most? … Dan Plesac and I are united on this front – the Seattle Mariners spring training camp that we spent an entire day at was by far the best vibe of any camp we attended. It’s not even close.”

Dylan Moore has suffered a setback in his comeback from surgery, according to Seattle Times beat reporter Ryan Divish via the Locked On Mariners podcast:

As speculated, would anyone trade Chris Flexen for infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who reportedly has lost his starting role with the New York Yankees:

I would probably stick with Mason McCoy at this point. He's supposed to be a very good defensive shortstop and he hit 21 dingers last year at Tacoma, whereas IKF has basically no power.harmony wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 2:22 amDylan Moore has suffered a setback in his comeback from surgery, according to Seattle Times beat reporter Ryan Divish via the Locked On Mariners podcast:

If you haven’t seen this interview then enjoy…. Our Skipper has matured into a winner.

The Kelenic discussion was fascinating to me and gives a reason or two why it’s taken Jared longer to get going. Basically boiled down to not being a team player and now is waking up to the fact that it’s a team sport.
Loved this

JK was so good, so young in the minors. It was inexplicable that he was so bad in the majors. It has to be mental. He seems to be figuring it out, but until he takes that into the regular season, it’s meaningless. I think he’ll be much better. Probably won’t be hitting .438 this season, but better than .140. If he could hit well enough to lead off against righties by mid season that would be awesome.

The interactions that stand out to me are the powder incident when JK was celebrating and Tye doused him. It’s like the difference between Julio and JK Julio is humble and well grounded whereas the kid seems all hype, every on line focus was on him and it boiled over to him thinking we were holding him back when in reality he was immature and selfish. It’s taken a humbling couple of years to bring him off his high horse. Jerry in his interview with Brock and Salk is gambling plain and simple he said they are gambling on JK having a breakoutJuliooooo wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 2:11 pmJK was so good, so young in the minors.
