Digging deeper, since 2006, the team that clinched its pennant first has won the World Series just twice -- the 2008 Phillies and 2018 Red Sox -- making the early clincher 2-11 in that span.

Well the Nats are going to be underdogs in the WS and it has zero to do with them sweeping the Cards and forgetting how to play baseball over the next few days.

Ah, but it’s amount Momentum, hot bats, hot pitching, in a groove, interrupted by at most a single day.

Too many idle days, too much time to think, you get restless, lose that crispness.

You get stale.

Not a perfect analogy, but you see these starting pitchers dominating a game for say, 6 innings, then, a 2 hour rain delay.

They seldom continue.
